...as football fans walked home after celebrating their Premiership win...

Several people have been injured after a car ploughed into a crowd of jubilant Liverpool fans during their Premier League victory parade this evening.

The shocking incident unfolded just after 6pm on Water Street in the heart of Liverpool's city centre, as thousands of fans packed the streets to celebrate their team's triumphant season.

Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes, with dramatic images showing police cordons, litter strewn across the road, and a strong presence of officers, ambulances and even a fire engine.
A man was swiftly detained by police.

Multiple people were reportedly injured, with harrowing scenes captured by bystanders. One person was seen being taken away on a stretcher, while another man was pictured leaning heavily on a police officer for support.

Authorities say both Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper are being kept fully briefed on the developing situation.

Harry Rashid, 48, from Solihull, was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters when he witnessed the collision.

He told the Telegraph: 'It happened about 10 feet away from us. We were just in a crowd and we had no control over where we would be, because it was a very narrow street.

This grey people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us.

'It was travelling south, down Water Street, straight towards this strand, which is where the docks are.

'It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.'

PM Keir Starmer said: 'The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

'I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.

'I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.'

The terrifying scenes unfolded just hours after Liverpool FC's trophy parade got underway at 2pm, with stars including Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah leading celebrations atop the open-top bus.

My daughter was right there in Liverpool city centre this morning...in fact she didn't leave until 2pm... she'd driven back from Wales, and had to drop her friend off at the station in Liverpool to get her flight back to Spain.... and my DD said that Liverpool city centre was a nightmare to negotiate because streets were all blocked off.. and car parks were closed because of the football ..... so even her sat nav was taking her in the direction of closed roads there was so many.... I'm very happy she was out of there before this tragedy

The news programme on TV and the newspapers, should
be held to account, for these events, if they never reported
them, then other nutters wouldn't know how to do it, they,
the other nutters, don't know how to think for themselves!

Mike.

well as of yet we don't know what's happened. To give him the benfit of the doubt he may have had a medical issue and lost control of his car... I hope that's the case... rather than the worst case scenario..

Saw a video and it looks like he purposely steers the van to the right handside of the road where much of the crowd went too.

That being said before this happened I was thinking about complaining how US soccer fans are becoming as bad or worse as some European ones after the brawl in San Diego. US soccer fan not quite there yet.

Speedy recovery to the injured

What a terrible accident. People enjoying themselves after Liverpool won the game. This is happening all too often in many countries. One thing I find appalling is people taking photos of the injured. Was it done deliberately?

I think she had an angel looking after her, hollydolly. Thank goodness, she was not involved in this tragic situation.

I can't think of a single reason for such a thing, if not terrorism then what on earth!

I am so glad your daughter is safe. You and she must be so shocked.

Take reasonable precautions, but you cannot go around living your life in fear. I visit Christmas markets in Europe every year and in June, we're off to Mainz, Germany to see the Johannes festival. This is a mid-summer festival of music, food, drink, games etc.. tied in with celebrating the city's most famous citizen, Johannes Gutenburg, inventor of printing using movable type.

The police said that they're not treating it as a terrorist

A total of 27 people have been taken to hospital following the horrific incident, including four children. One child was trapped under the car with three adults when firefighters arrived to save them.

Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram confirmed this morning there are 'still four people who are very, very ill in hospital'. The other 20 casualties were treated at the scene

Jack Trotter, one of the victims who was rushed to hospital, said he remains in 'agony' after being discharged and described it as 'the most horrifying incident I've ever experienced in my life'.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer this morning said the whole country 'stands with Liverpool', describing the incident as 'scenes of joy turned to utter horror and devastation'.

In what has been described as an 'unprecedented' move, Merseyside Police quickly confirmed a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested, adding that it wasn't being treated as terrorism.
There's a video here showing the car driving down a croded street with football fans trying to stop him, and he reversed into them

A 53-year-old man arrested after a car ploughed into Liverpool fans enjoying a trophy parade is accused of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving under the influence of drugs, police said today.

Merseyside Police Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill told reporters there were a total of 65 confirmed casualties, including children, following the incident on Water Street in the city centre yesterday.

A press conference also heard 50 people had been taken to hospital and are receiving ongoing treatment as a result of the incident
'It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car involved in this incident was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street after the road block was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public who was having a heart attack,' she said.

'As with many large events, with event organisers we planned for all contingencies and this included the implementation of road closures to protect pedestrians and an armed policing presence was also in place throughout the day.'

Police said the white British man who had been arrested was from West Derby on Merseyside. An 'extensive investigation' remains ongoing, with Merseyside Police receiving help from neighbouring forces.
Up to 1million Liverpool fans had gathered to celebrate the club winning the
Premier League title with a 10-mile trophy parade through the city centre.

But the celebration turned to carnage at around 6pm when a row broke out between the driver and spectators. Footage on social media appears to show a man banging on the window after the driver backed into the crowd surrounding the vehicle.

Another man then approaches the car and kicks the rear windscreen, prompting the driver to reverse back into him.

Tensions mount as the car moves back and forth, with at least two spectators punching and kicking the vehicle. The man who was reversed into then appears to smash the rear windscreen after chasing the vehicle and launching a missile.

Separate video, taken at the same time, shows another fan opening the car door, before the driver pulls it shut and accelerates down Dale Street. Later footage shows the Ford Galaxy trying to drive into the crowd on the connecting Water Street.

Several people are seen striking the car as it moves past an ambulance and ploughs through the crowd, knocking over multiple people in its path.

I hope the seeming increase in fatal public events is just a matter of chance and perception. There seem to be an awful lot of issues there today that might drive people over the edge toward extreme actions.

He followed an ambulance into the area? Setting aside a security mistake that shows intent of somekind. Where did he think the ambulance would lead him if a mistake.

Staying away from places which have been proven to be dangerous is not living a life of fear it's having common sense

Car ploughs into Football crowd in Liverpool city centre.

I live approximately 5 miles as the crow flies across the River Mersey from where this nightmare scenario occured.
There are many Liverpool FC supporters that live around the Wirral, and only this afternoon, I was sipping tea over the road at a certain lovely lady's house, where some young relatives of hers (who were there) were giving us a graphic account of the horror the world has now witnessed.

I feel so, so, sorry for all of those innocent people who were injured by that wicked man.
I also feel so sorry for the team and the many, many thousands who turned up in the city for a joyous celebration, and then had it wrecked by the driver of the car.

That person should never be allowed any freedom now, he should spend the rest of his days in prison, where some very tough inmates will no doubt administer further punishment.
