Reports that Ukraine has struck deep inside with a drone attack on Russia bombers. Varying reports of the number of planes destroy. Some railroad tracks and/or bridges also struck.

Ukraine destroys 40 aircraft deep inside Russia ahead of peace talks in Istanbul

It's a stunning blow. Hopefully Putin's retaliatory move doesn't create a lot of civilian damage or escalate the war as peace talks are approaching.

More bad news for Russia

Ukraine’s Russian tank losses figures©The Daily Digest

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, as of May 30th, Ukrainian forces have eliminated a total of 10,856 tanks since the invasion started. However, sorting out the truth of this figure is difficult because it comes from a direct combatant in the war.
Deciphering the number of tanks Moscow has lost since invading Ukraine is not an easy task, but there is one third-party open-source intelligence group that has been keeping a running tally of verifiable Russian equipment losses since 2022 .
The Dutch group Oryx uses only unique photo and video evidence from the frontlines in Ukraine to count Russian losses. The group recently reported that the Russians crossed a new major threshold in tank losses that it could visually verify.
According to numbers published by Oryx at the end of May, Russia suffered over 4,000 visually confirmed tank losses. As of May 30th, Oryx reported it could confirm that Putin has suffered a total of 4,029 tank losses since invading Ukraine.
It is important to note that, unlike the report from the Ukrainian General Staff, Oryx’s list of Russian losses distinguishes between equipment that has been destroyed, damaged, abandoned, or captured on the battlefield, so not all tank losses are destroyed tanks.
46 destroyed, 158 damaged, 392 abandoned, and 533 captured. However, there is another piece of vital information the open-source intelligence firm points out about its losses list.
The list Oryx has put together only includes what the group can visually verify via photo or videographic evidence, something the open-source intelligence firm explains means “the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher” than it records.

How much higher Russian tank losses could be is unknown, but Oryx provides a great base for understanding exactly where Russian equipment losses stand at any given point in the conflict, which is helpful when trying to understand the scale of the war.
As of May 30th, Oryx reported the total number of visually verified Russian equipment losses in the war stood at 21,968 with 16,840 pieces of equipment being destroyed, 895 damaged, 1,173 abandoned, and 3,060 captured.

the word escalation comes to mind ? - I don't know why?

Do you think it hasn't already escalated to it's peak?
Russian resources are seriously depleted, so the possibility of escalation is that it may come from the Ukrainians.
Having said that that we can expect payback attacks.
Robin Horsfall is someone who provides informed comments on this war.

It doesn't matter. Putin and Russians are not going to back down. They out number Ukraine in manpower and weapons anyway.

This could be the turn that has been hoped for, I read that
some of the suppliers of missiles to Ukraine, have removed
the distance limits and are allowing Ukraine to fire them at
Russia, I believe that in the past they were only allowed to
use them against troops on the battlefield, but the Russians
started bombing civilian targets during the night.

Hopefully this will give Russia, cause to think!

Mike.

Yeh the US and Europeans lifted distance restrictions on long range missiles last week. The missiles I think were used on the bridges and railroads.

Too bad they couldn't have used the drone tactics for territory which what negotiations will come down to.

As stressed as Russian logistics are they seem to have no problem getting and/or manufacturing things like artillery shells which seemed to be used daily. Also there numerous drone counter measures out there I can't believe the drones got that close in without detection or damage.

can you imagine letting some irresponsible leader getting his/her hands on such items ? the world would start becoming chaotic!!

Because you're not thinking clearly, if at all. RU bombers attacking UKr were damaged or destroyed thereby preventing Putin from bombing UK civilians and military positions. Sounds more like UKr forcibly preventing RU from escalating and killing more innocents.

UKr has the right to defend itself. End of story.

They drove the drones w/in a few miles of the bases and then launched. Fortunately RU can not build more long range bombers.

Ukraine intelligence says Russia preparing for a new offensive on the eastern front.

This might have been just posturing for leverage but now it may be his retaliatory move.
The Ukrainians haven't finished yet.

Following Sunday's major assault on Russian airfields that destroyed 40 aircraft, Ukrainian forces are continuing to ramp up their counter-offensive against Moscow's forces.

According to Russian Telegram channels, the latest wave of drones targeted multiple cities and industrial facilities overnight on 2 June, triggering explosions and air raid sirens in at least six regions: Voronezh, Kursk, Lipetsk, Ryazan, Ivanovo, and Volgograd. The highest number were reportedly downed over Kursk Oblast, followed by Belgorod. Two additional drones were shot down over Russian-occupied Crimea, Russia's Defence Ministry said.

Meanwhile, Russia launched 472 drones and seven missiles into Ukraine on Sunday, the largest drone attack since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to Ukraine's air force.

Earlier on Sunday, Ukraine's military also reported that a missile strike on an army training unit killed at least 12 service personnel and injured more than 60.
The ramped-up exchanges of fire came ahead of another round of direct peace talks between the two sides in Istanbul on Monday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine will participate in the meeting, with the delegation being led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
"I outlined (Ukraine's) positions ahead of the meeting in Istanbul on Monday," Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram on Sunday following a briefing with top officials.

He also listed Ukraine's key demands for the talks; a complete and unconditional ceasefire, the release of all prisoners and the return of abducted children.

"“This is a stunning success for Ukraine’s special services,” said Justin Bronk, senior research fellow for air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute in London.

“If even half the total claim of 41 aircraft damaged/destroyed is confirmed, it will have a significant impact on the capacity of the Russian Long Range Aviation force to keep up its regular large scale cruise missile salvos against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, whilst also maintaining their nuclear deterrence and signaling patrols against NATO and Japan,” he said in an email."

Lessons learned comrades!

RU quickly takes action to preserve the rest of it's fleet of strategic bombers, (which btw the principle function of which is to shoot nukes at other countries.). The world is actually a bit safer today(as hard as that is to imagine.)

Me neither. You do know these countries are at war, right?

This was an audacious operation that will have ripple effects in all western nations. These small drones are a VERY effective weapon, and they don't really have an effective way to prevent such attacks. This is the future of war written large.

so the little man from Ukraine has got a surprisingly sharp sting in his tail then?

Maybe the bombers are out of commission, but, the Ruskies still have an awful lot of intercontinental missiles that can cause an awful lot of damage.
As of recent estimates, Russia's active arsenal includes approximately 300-400 ICBMs, capable of carrying around 1,200-1,500 nuclear warheads. Russia's ICBMs, such as the Topol-M, Yars, and Sarmat, can reach targets over 5,500 km (3,400 miles) away, covering intercontinental distances. They are deployed in silos, mobile launchers, and submarines.
I doubt we've heard the last of this.

More bad news for Russia

This reminds me of back during the Vietnam War when the nightly news would report the body count scores that supposedly showed that we were winning the war because we were killing more of them then they were killing of us. And we all know how that turned out.

Bottom line, I was lied to so much during the Vietnam War that I don't believe any of these reported war score cards.
