I get an occasional glimpse of the brush tail possum that comes into my garden every night to eat the fruit that I leave out. She is very shy and easily spooked.
When I start preparing her food platter I turn on the outside spotlight to let her know food is coming. Then I walk up to the back fence and call out things like "Here Poss, Poss, something good for Possie to eat". Then I go back inside, turn off the interior lights so that my kitchen becomes a hide, and wait to see her come down and start eating.
I don't have to wait very long and as soon as she starts eating I turn off the outside light. She may live in suburbia but she is still a wild creature. I don't want to make a pet of her.
She lives under the roof of a neighbour's garage and goes out after dark to forage for food. Not everyone is happy to have a possum eating the fruits and flowers in their garden so I figure that if she feeds in my yard she is pretty safe. One day I hope to see a joey also enjoying the food I provide.
Here she is again.
I thought she was eating wild apple leaves,,but think she was eating small branches?
Notice her mouth is open,, cheek is puffed out.
