Are You Living or Just Existing?

After moving to the East coast of Scotland, I was talking to a gentleman who had moved from the west. As he put it, you can live on the East, but you survive on the West. Most tourists head for the west coast which is great for those of us on the east.
Lol..I doubt that's true.... the west coast of Scotland is the most diverse, the most vibrant, with the most to do and where the tourists want to visit with the beautiful scenery and lochs .....the East coast has very little compared to it.... and Dundee and Aberdeen have the highest drug problem in Scotland before even Glasgow the largest city

I feel so alive when I'm with my son/grandson; that includes FaceTime as well as actual visits. I'm sorry to say, without their company I just exist.........it's on me to perk up and get moving.
perhaps what you simply need is company... it could simply just be that..to make you feel less anxious. You live in NYC the American capital of the world.. surely there are some places near you where you can go to have some company once a week or so...

when did you have your back surgery ?
I had lower back surgery (lumbar spine), which was a fusion on January 20. I had my first 3 surgeries in 2010 and have been doctoring for the pain since. On January 15, the sciatic nerve gave out and they operated on me on the 20th. I had no feeling in my left leg for almost a moth and my left knee get giving out. I couldn’t run without collapsing. Today, thanks to physical therapy, it’s much better. I wear a brace to run, but I do run now.

I have been having continuous pain across the back at my belt line. On Monday, I had 2 epidurals and the pain in the middle of my belt line and the left hip area have subsided, but the right area around the hip still tortures me after running a quarter of a mile.

You are right. I always feel better when the sun is out and I can go outside for an hour or two. I usually run into a neighbor or two to chat with, and when that happens I feel better, like I accomplished something!

The weather has been so unusually bad lately. Cloudy, rainy; I can't go out for my strolls around my park, my neighborhood.

I don't get enough company, you are right. Since Covid I haven't been to my senior center and have doubts I will go again. I have to take a crowded bus that doesn't come often. Haven't been up to the challenge.

I'm too dependent on weather to be happy.

Oh I know a little of the pain you've been suffering.. I have herniated discs in my back and been doctoring since 2008.. and have had several epidurals which were great and took the pain away for a good long time and many sessions with a sports physiotherapist .. No fusion tho' but I've known people to have that surgery.

Yo say the pain is torturous on the right hip after running... you know what the old joke is...lol... don't run... :sneaky:

you may be overdoing the running? physical therapists advice might be useful?

Why is that, Capt?
It depends what you're asking. The west of Scotland is rugged, beautiful, bleak etc.., but very wet. The population is small and amenities are few. The beauty and remoteness attracts many visitors, but this brings many problems. The roads are often narrow , winding and steep and many drivers have no idea how to drive on them. There is a problem with litter, and inconsiderate parking and abuse of facilities. In short, it is a victim of it's own success. I no longer go there.

In contrast, the east has a much softer landscape, but much less rainfall. Apart from areas such as Royal Deeside, and Speyside, it is less tourist oriented. This means that beaches, roads and countryside are quieter so it has a decent quality of life. It could support a lot more tourism, but most people seem to like the quieter life.
