Spoke to the Walmart Manager

Going to Walmart was my late mother's favorite "field trip". She'd go there, get a cart to lean on and then spend at least an hour going up and down the aisles marveling at all the things to buy. She'd get what she came for, go home and rest up after her "exercise program". It was warm in the winter and cool in the summer and she never got rained on in there.

She and the manager were great buddies (my mom had the talent of getting to be "great buddies" with about everyone she met). She had his cellphone number and she'd call him when she got parked and he'd run out with a cart and an umbrella if needed and escort her in or send someone else out. She was the Queen of Walmart.

About 3 years ago a company similar to Costco purchased land in 3 different locations in the suburbs of Adelaide S.Aust ….I forget now, it had a similar name Costco (brands) … Like Kirkland …..think it was German owned

They .had the land cleared ….about 1/2 km from our one and only Costco in S.A. ….had all the infrastructure installed ….had the hugeeee foundations laid …….then decided they wouldn’t build ……
so now that …. area near Costco is partly built townhouses x 100’s

So costco Is the only major wharehouse type shopping we have in South Aust ….other than that we have the usual WW / Cole’s / Drakes ~ Foodland independent types of supermarkets.

We normally spend a couple of months in QLD each winter 🥶 ( its winter now )

I’ve not seen any Wallmart in the parts of Qld where we stay ( that’s not saying there isn't one in Qld ….other states of Australia) it’s just I’ve not seen one

And yes we do have people shopping in their PJ’s @jujube

Well Beezer could have gone to the grocery store for the milk, got in his car and driven to the drugstore for his scripts, got back in the car and driven to a pet supply store for his cat food. Walmart is about 30 stores under one roof so It's going to be big and involve a lot of walking.

That's why I shop at Kroger and pay higher prices -- much higher. If I was younger and had stronger legs I would do all my shopping at Walmart and be happy I could get socks and cereal at the same place.

Yesterday we did our usual weekly shopping at Aldi instead of Kroger. What would have cost us over $100 at Kroger was $30. They didn't have some of the things we needed though.

This is interesting. I shop in two different Walmarts, one close to my clients and the other close to where we live. In both cases, the pharmacy areas are both immediately inside the entrances.

I had always assumed this was done in purpose so that folks didn’t have to walk far for their prescriptions and personal items.

Both stores have been revamped and upgraded but they’ve left the general arrangement alone so I’m not having to refigure where everything is!

Locating milk in the farthest corner has always been part of “Grocery Store Marketing” so I don’t think they will budge on that. But maybe moving the prescriptions to the closest spot to accommodate customers with mobility challenges would be something they would consider.

But if you want quick groceries, go to Aldi’s - I can be in and out in less than 10 minutes. And they are maybe the only grocery store I can think of that does not locate the milk in the far corner.

And if you want really quick milk only, you can find certain gas-convenience stores that sell it at competitive prices.

Here’s the story about the German owned store that planned building in 3 different locations in Adelaide but pulled out after foundations were laid
It was Called Kaufland …. Sorta similar name to Costco’s homebrand products Kirkland.
Copied this bit …
Its half-built hypermarket on Churchill Road, Prospect, was going to be the first store to open. ( the one I mentioned near Costco )

Fears Kaufland pull-out will create more vacant Adelaide eyesores

There will come a day when people will not have to leave their homes. Bought items will be delivered or shipped, people can video chat with others. Work at home became a viable option during the pandemic. Even many churches video tape their services so people can view them at home. We are slowly moving away from social interaction.
Thats kind of happened now. For a fee most groceries now offer home delivery.
Walmart and others will ship for free if you spend a certain amount. In store pickup is also free.

I started doing shipping during covid because I got tired of traipsing all over the store and only finding half of what I came for.
A lot of the things that dont need to be squeezed I have shipped. I still like to go instore for my meat and veggies etc.
Also it gets me out of the house. :D

Edit to add. Kroger has a drive up window for prescriptions. Walmart has curb side pick up for online orders.
Not sure about others.

I stopped going to Walmart years ago when they built the strip mall out in front of my neighborhood.

I swore I wouldn't shop in the grocery store because it would be more expensive.

Turns out, not having to go on to the highway outweighs any savings I might have made by driving the extra 10 miles.
