after suspect 'started blaze as bait'

At least two first responders were killed and numerous others were injured after they responded to a fire in Idaho and were shot at, in what authorities have described as an ambush.

An unknown number of assailants allegedly set the blaze as bait for the first responders in Coeur d'Alene and began firing as they arrived on the scene at around 2pm, authorities said at a news conference Sunday night.

The suspects, who are believed to have been using a high-powered rifle, were still firing at the time.

We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak,' Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris announced. 'We're taking rapid fire.'

He added that authorities are trying to take the suspect into custody, but noted that the heavy brush is making it difficult to apprehend him.

Norris then gave police the authority to shoot to kill if they are given the opportunity, as authorities worry about the civilians who may still be stuck on Canfield Mountain.

'I am hoping someone has a clear shot, they are not showing any signs of wanting to surrender,' the sheriff said of the shooters, adding that it is 'going to be a tough couple of hours' as the fire continues to burn.

Northern Lakes Fire District Chief Pat Riley had earlier explained to KHQ that the fire crews were forced to pull back as the shooting began.

He then said at the news conference that he is not deploying any more firefighters to the area until the threat is neutralized.

In the meantime, residents are being asked to avoid the area, and those who are stuck on the mountain are urged to shelter in place.

Meanwhile, authorities from Spokane, Washington are heading south to provide assistance in what they described on social media as an 'active, ongoing incident' on East Nettleton Gulch Road.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also confirmed on social media that assets are heading to the scene to provide 'tactical and operational support.'

Additionally, law enforcement agents and medical professionals are on standby at Kootenai Health as the number of officers and firefighters who were injured in the attack remains unclear.

But in harrowing radio traffic posted online, one firefighter could be heard screaming, 'Send law enforcement right now, there's an active shooter zone.'

He could later be heard warning his fellow firefighters, 'Stop. Do not come up here.'

'My immediate reaction was completely heartbroken,' Riley told KHQ.

'We trained for this. You never want to see it in your own community.'

Local reports indicate Life Flight helicopters have been deployed to the scene, and photos and videos posted online show a large police presence in the city.

The shooting prompted the evacuation of the Fernan Gun Club, whose members were told there was a sniper in the area, the Coeur d'Alene Press reports.

So am I, Holly. I was just thinking that it was a town that something like that wouldn't happen in. But, I guess there's no place now that bad things don't happen...

We spent some time there and it was so peaceful.
it could be the killers planned it to happen there because it's the last place anyone would expect it....

They are now saying that there is 4 people known dead, but they can’t get into the area where all of the firefighters were being shot, so they do not actually know how many people are hurt or dead. They do not know how many shooters, there are, or how well armed the shooters are, but the FBI has sent in people, Kristi Noem said the DOD is sending in people, and I also read that there was a Federal Marshall team up there.
Some people are speculating that it might be Travis Decker, the man who killed his 3 children in Washington state a few weeks ago, and was last seen headed towards north Idaho.

However, it sounds like there are multiple shooters, and it is also possible that this could be one of the Iranian sleeper cells attacking. Usually, those attacks happen where there are a lot of people, and not in the country, but it is still a possibility.
Since they can’t fight the forest fire, it is going to continue to burn and grow until they are sure that all of the danger is gone and shooters are either arrested or taken out.

This is looking like it could be a several day event at this point, because there is a lot of forest land around the area, where shooters can hide, and they have possibly planned all of this out well in advance and know where they will move to next.
Coeur D’Alene is just south of Sandpoint, Idaho, where I grew up, and east of Spokane, Washington.
They are now going to be flying tactical teams over the area to try and get more information on the shooters.

Here is the recording of one of the first responders, saying there is an active shooter, asking for police help, and telling all firefighters to stay away. He says that everyone up there has been shot.

The latest report says that a Blackhawk helicopter is on the way to the area. It would be equipped with surveillance and weapons, so that should be a help once it gets there.

really ?.. in that beautiful place ?...
North Idaho was blessed w lots of cheap, remote land where these militia's bought several hundred acre properties where they live and train. Not only do we have our home grown idiots, N Idaho has become the "safe space" for others that might describe themselves as "extreme conservatives" that come from the west coast because they like Idaho politics. Idaho used to be a community of mostly simple libertarians people trying to make a living w a "live and let live" attitude. It's not that way any longer.

"Idaho has seen several legislative proposals aimed at repealing the state's longstanding law banning private militias. One such bill, Senate Bill 1056, was sponsored by Sen. Dan Foreman, R-Moscow, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former Moscow police officer. This bill would repeal a section of the Idaho Code (46-802) that prohibits any group other than the National Guard from associating as a military organization or parading with firearms in public."

"The Idaho Senate has passed versions of this bill, but it has faced challenges in the House and has not yet become law. The debate continues, with supporters and opponents weighing the balance between constitutional rights and the need to maintain public order and safety."

US Senator Jim Risch, who represents Idaho, decried Sunday’s “villainous attack”

“This villainous attack on the people who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our communities is despicable and NOT Idaho,” he went on. “We pray for the victims, their loved ones, and for justice.”

Yes, IT IS IDAHO and Jim Risch played a part in making it this way.

The latest news is that the shooter is dead. No more info on how he was shot, but they believe that he is the only shooter, and have lifted the shelter-in-place warnings. They should be able to deal with the fire now and get it put out before it spreads any further. By morning, hopefully they will have more information about the shooter.

So far, the police have not released any information abut the identity of the shooter. He was found through his cell phone signal, and was dead when they reached the body, which they had to quickly remove from the scene because it was right in the path of the wildfire by the time they found him.
The sheriff said they had snipers shooting back at the shooter, as well as an Army Blackhawk and DHS helicopters in the air, so any of those could have shot and killed him.

The sheriff mentioned weapons near the body, but did not go into detail, but that they believed there was only one shooter. However, since the body was found so close to the wildfire, it is possible that another shooter could have been killed and the body not seen because it was in the fire, so it will be a while before they can check everything out,
Once they have an identification (which they probably have and just not released yet), they should have a better idea why this whole thing happened.

Firefighters from all over the PNW are coming in to pay their respects for the firemen who were killed in the tragedy.

North Idaho is hotbed of lunatics, I'm not surprised unfortunately.
North Idaho has attracted a lot of strange people in the last 40 years. At least that's as long as I've been aware of it. There are nice people there too, but it has its share of crazies. Even in my home town just across the border in Montana, which was not a bastion of rational thought either, North Idaho had developed a reputation that few wanted to attain for Montana.

Then some things started to get wildly exaggerated too, like human sacrifices of captives traveling one particular lonely highway at night, And that probably drew more crazies. LIfe is getting stranger. Where can you go? What can you do? Move to the country? No, the crazies like the country. They are drawn to it hoping to be left alone. If they get a hankering to shoot someone, they can start a forest fire and wait for people to show up.

@JustDave, my cousin who lived there was a state policeman but he died about 4 years ago. He liked hunting and fishing which was a good place to live for him. He originally came from California which did not offer him the same lifestyle as in Idaho.
