Have you ever heard of "carpet stretching"?

When we moved into our home almost 20 years ago, there were a few "ridges" in the carpet that made it look like it had gotten too lax. Our realtor suggested "carpet stretching" and hired someone to do it. I'd never heard of it but it worked.

Fast forward to today. We've replaced the carpet since but again on the stairs and family room it developed "ridges". The stairs were particularly bad. We hired someone who came out today and stretched the carpet. He basically stretched and cut off excess and it looks great now.

I've never seen this in other place I've lived but perhaps it is because our carpet has a very short pile?

Yes, I have heard of it and had it done. I have 2 bedrooms that need it. I was going to wait until I made a decision about the new flooring in my bedroom. I have carpet in there now but am either going with a laminate or tile. All I do know is that the price for flooring has gone way up since I did the whole house about 14 years ago.

Yes, when installed carpet layers will stretch the carpet. Over time the carpet tack strip can release it's hold causing ridges. It's a simple process to have carpet layers come in and re-stretch the carpet if it's in good shape. If not, I'd replace it with a non carpet replacement. (But then I am not a fan of carpet, it holds too much dirt.)

If you decide to have it done, we used Kiwi and were quite happy with the job they did.

We have mostly hardwood floors but the family room is slightly lowered and came with carpet so putting some other type of flooring in it would look odd. I do agree about the dirt.

Yes I had it done once. It improved the situation. I’d rather replace the carpet with hard flooring. I’m not fond of carpets. That’s one vote out of two.
