When we moved into our home almost 20 years ago, there were a few "ridges" in the carpet that made it look like it had gotten too lax. Our realtor suggested "carpet stretching" and hired someone to do it. I'd never heard of it but it worked.
Fast forward to today. We've replaced the carpet since but again on the stairs and family room it developed "ridges". The stairs were particularly bad. We hired someone who came out today and stretched the carpet. He basically stretched and cut off excess and it looks great now.
I've never seen this in other place I've lived but perhaps it is because our carpet has a very short pile?
