I was curious, so did some checking, and the Sienna hasn't changed much at all in size or weight from the previous generation. The weight changed less than 200 lbs and the size by just over an inch. The new Sienna is only available in a hybrid to boost economy. It has 3 motors (A 4 cyl and two electrics), and the AWD model has a 4 cyl and 3 electric motors. Since it is a hybrid, it also has a battery pack. It probably just seems a lot bigger if you compare it to smaller models.
Just about every auto company offers at least one large model vehicle for those who have either big families, or carpool, road trips, camping, or hauling. I think the term minivan is just used as a category to differentiate it from the cargo vans. Like SUV's, there are sub compacts, compacts, mid size, and full size, depending on one's needs. The Chevy Suburban SUV has been around for over 50 years, and it's huge.
