Moving to an independent living community

In asnwer to your question Sunny..it definitely is... it's on almost constant repeat here on one channel or another....

off topic for a second... did you know Stephanie Cole was only 48 years old when she played Diana Trent in Waiting for God... hence the high pitch voice which she hoped would make her sound elderly.. she was born near the end of 1941.. and WFG aired in 1990... she's always played character actresses because of looking older than her age

Stephanie now..age 83

I remember watching Waiting For God, years ago, well maybe somewhere between 10-15 years ago on PBS here in the states. If memory serves wasn't she also in Doc Martin for awhile playing Doc's aunt?

I don't know if she was in Doc Martin. I never watched it... but she played smallish parts in most shows... except WFG and Tenco...where she was one of the lead characters

The show started here in 1990... 35 years ago..and it's pretty much been on a rolling repeat ever since...

I don't know if any of you have ever watched One foot in the grave... ..if you have, you'll recognise his long suffering next door neighbour Pippa, as the same actress who played the timid dopey Jane in Waiting or God.. Janine Duvitski

A couple of years ago, I looked into moving to a senior independent living complex in upstate New York. The apartments looked lovely exxcept that the studios looked too much like nursing home rooms, but the photos of the residents depressed me terribly.
Even though I am a senior citizen, I don't feel old, still work, albeit part-time, I still get out regularly and am involved in my community. i am constantly seeking to learn new things, at the job and online. I have an upending thirst for knowledge. The pictures of the residents at the retirement complex all looked tired out, bored and just waiting to die. The highlight of their day, besides talking about grandkids, gardening and family, seemed to be lining up for the communal meals served each evening.
Does anyone else feel the same about independent living communities? I know it's nice to have company around to socialize with but I prefer associating with people of various ages and professions rather than with people who just seem to have given up on life and new experiences.

I have not read through all of these posts but I have to say that in my opinion you are just not ready for the lifestyle these retirement residencies offer.

At age 92 I still manage to function quite well in a regular normal lifestyle apartment.
My apartment building has a good mixture of young , elderly, old and I personally think it is important to mix with all ages.

I did the rounds over the last ten years of these residences and found that I was criticizing everything about them, mostly the cost of course.
I knew I would never be able to cope with 3 course meals at 8.30 am, 12pm and 5.30pm which are the standard times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As for entertainment, well I really did not want to dance with some old gentleman to the tunes of
Perry Como etc., etc., or watch some old movies with others who are probably sleeping anyway.

I feel pretty much the same way about retirement communities.
ISome friends who are living as such are feeling it was a big mistake in making the move they did.

Just my tuppence worth and I will shut-up now but I say....
.... live in the land of the living !
