First day of spring here

Here in the U.K. today 22nd September is the first day of Autumn, in my part of England the morning started damp and foggy but brightened up as the morning went on and was more like a summer day.:)

Fall certainly fell in one swell foop. Little front came through with scattered showers and chilly wind. Thought I was ready for the change of seasons but not looking forward to being cold. Perhaps, I should be heading down under for my favorite time of year . . . Spring!

First day of fall, one of my favorite seasons! Like Rider, I welcome the cool...here's the Aspens turning colors in autumn...

We tend to just go by the calendar months rather than equinox dates. Been spring since Sept 1. The seasons have slipped around a bit anyway. Last year it was coolish right through to Christmas, this year it's been warmish since July. Have to take it as it comes.

It would be pretty near impossible to tell what time of year a photo was taken up around here anyway. There are very few deciduous trees around so the only difference between summer and winter is the temperature.

Even the wattle and gum trees seem to be flowering at random, some were a month to 6 weeks early this year, some are just making a show now, some haven't flowered at all yet. It's all too complicated so the calendar will do. It's more 'seasonal' further south though.

Funny that some like the contrasts, I don't, somewhere permanently 28-30C would do me fine.
A friend from Canada was aghast that on a midwinter day in Sydney we were sitting in the sun in the backyard among flowers and had oranges on the tree. She kept trying to convince me that "this isn't WINTER !"

I took her word for that, I figure Canadians would be the gurus on things Winter. She said she couldn't imagine living without the fall colours and seasonal contrasts. I couldn't imagine living with them! Horses for courses.

I could deal with year-round warm temperatures at this point - I've spent enough winters freezing my tail off and shoveling white stuff. In my dim and distant memories I also remember what fun it was to DRIVE through that gift from Heaven.

Today was a solemn occasion being the first day of Autumn: the semi-annual Changing Of The Storm-Door Screens. This year the gala event was hosted by Sir Anthony Hopkins with a special guest musical appearance by Sir Elton John. I was once again chosen to be the Window Bearer (in the Spring, of course, the title is Screen Bearer)!

See my Tweets of the event for more details ...

If we didn't have a winter... then how would I be able to sit in front of the wood fire and sip a nice single-malt.

You're more than welcome to indulge your passion with freezing toes and blue-tinged nose.

In the meantime I'll be playing "Find The Fish" with my dolphin friends on a nice, warm coral reef. :p

Autumn actually IS my favorite season - always has been, one of the main reasons being that it's easier to hide my numerous weapons under a light jacket. It's nice not to be sweating like a pig entering a bacon factory, and the loss of those annoying little bugs that like to fly up my nose when I'm trying to be all suave and debonair with the fairer sex is a positive as well.

Unfortunately, whether due to global warming, pole-shifting or just everyone exercising at the same time, autumn has become a season measured not in months or even weeks, but in mere days and, in at least a few years of memory, hours. Here in NE PA we tend to have two seasons and two seasons only: hot as Hell and cold as a witch's teat.

If I have to endure Hell I want to do it surrounded by palm trees, sand and half-naked coeds sashaying down the street.

I don't know where you are, Sid, but I'm in MO, and it's definitely Autumn here....unless of course, you were joking. :D

This used to be my favorite season next to Spring - but now I do miss the snow and the blizzards and the white-outs; must be eccentric in my old age.

If you see a beat up lookin' old broad under a nearby palm that'll be me.
We should get along okay, I'll be checkin' out the half of the co-eds you're not interested in.

Read somewhere that the Vikings depicted Hell as a cold dark place. I think I might have a clue where some of my DNA sprang from.

Ditto, same here in NC with the little cold front and scattered showers. We still have some really warm weather left, but not much. I'm with you in heading down under. I loathe cold weather and am preparing for hibernation....with northern friends laughing out loud at what I call "cold" weather.

I LOVE this time of year. I can see the leaves turning red a little bit more every day. Humidity is gone, air is clear and clean. I can't imagine not having four distinct seasons. Spring for recovering from Winter, Summer to dip the tooties in the ocean, Fall to get over the heat of Summer and Winter to walk in the snow and sit in front of the fire. Love it all. The only thing I don't like is that now the days will be shorter, and when time changes, it will be dark by 6 o'clock. I lose all energy when we don't have long days.

TWHRider - would love to come give you a hand, but have my hands full here.

Such a confusing thread ... lol ... I know that it's my favorite time of the year.

I'm loving the weather that FALL has brought to Texas. .. It's been cool and rainy and such a nice change after a hot summer. Am so enjoying outdoor activites now, even all the leaf raking! Can't get enough of it.

Happy SPRING to everyone down under!!

Works for me. I'll bring the booze.

Hel, or Helheim, sometimes even known as Niflheim (although the latter is most probably a different place - hard to translate the original works). It was a "frosty and misty place" where you went if you were a coward, an oath-breaker or otherwise acted dishonorably in life, but there wasn't the concept of "sin" that the Christian faith associates with their Hell.

... sort of like Vegas during a cold snap. :playful:

Thanks Bonnie. It's already been and gone up in the far North.
The cuz got back home last night. He and his neighbour had done the 'boys big adventure' thing, loaded up an old van, and headed for Cape York to go gold fossicking for 3 weeks. They left a week early. It was already 42C every day up there. Even the old locals are gasping. That's high summer temps, it's usually only low 30s this time of year.

It was too much for the lads, they were stewing slowly in the van, neither are big drinkers so they couldn't sit in the pub all day, and it was too hot go out digging, so they scarpered. They'd found a couple of tiny nuggets though so they're happy enough.

No Anne I am not joking. I'll Meant to type fall. And I proof read the thing before I posted. Guess I had my head in a dark spot.
Well like I tell my kids, Listen to what I mean and not what I say.
