California Will Automatically Register Millions of Voters

On Saturday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that will allow the state to automatically register millions of residents to vote, using their DMV records.
Starting in 2016, every eligible California citizen who goes to a DMV office to get a driver’s license or renew one will be instantly registered to vote, unless he or she chooses to opt out.

“Citizens are currently forced to opt-in to their fundamental right to vote through registration,” said Secretary of State Alex Padilla, who wrote the bill and pushed for its passage. “We do not have to opt-in to other rights.

We do not have to opt-in to free speech or due process. The right to vote should be no different.”

In an interview earlier this year, Padilla told ThinkProgress the new law could help bring the 6.6 million California citizens who are eligible but not registered to vote into the democratic process.

Padilla’s office reported that on Election Day last year, more than 40,000 people logged on to the Secretary of State website trying to register to vote. “Unfortunately it was too late,” he said.

The new “motor voter” law is just one of several steps aimed at addressing California’s dismally low election participation rate — one of the worst in the nation. Just over 42 percent of eligible voters turned out in last fall’s election. In Los Angeles County, just 31 percent of registered voters cast a ballot.

I sure hope that check also includes registered citizen and eligible to vote and not just anyone or whomever happens to have a car and wants to have a license. Just a visitor from elsewhere or a fence jumper not yet eligible to vote should not get to vote.

I will need to look that up and learn more.

Interesting concept.

I think there has been a development in OZ that automatically registers 18 year olds using the birth records but I'm not sure how it is established where they are living at that time.

If there is an indication like this on their driver's licence, they won't be registered to vote. Oregon is already doing the same thing, I wasn't aware of that.

Yes, I read about this earlier, I really like what Gov Brown and the Democrats have done in California, they've passed a long list of constructive laws.

DW when my daughter turned 18 she received Enrolment Papers in the mail. She was attending Uni at the time so maybe those records were used? Or Census records? This was nine years ago.

I went to the California DMV and voting requirements. Yes they do determine if you are a citizen before giving a license. If not a citizen, could not prove yourself to be a citizen, then you get a different style of license and paper work will also be different. I forget the many details but enough have already posted so that makes it OK too. So only those with a citizen style of license will get automatically registered.

Now I feel better about this system.

Glad you feel better Bob, you have to trust that they have something in place not to just let any "fence jumper", as you say, vote in American elections. There's so much voter suppression going on now, I'm happy to see that people don't have to jump through hoops to register.

Why should they have to do that when registering to vote is one of the easiest things one could possibly do? You go the the BOE or your local library, get a form, fill it out and put it in the mail. In NC, when you get your driver's license, you can register to vote at the same time.

Are you trying to bring those terms back? I have not heard them for a long time. Should I have used 'illegal immigrants' instead?

Not all of our illegals are Mexicans either. This big mob scene last winter or spring came from various parts of Central and South America areas. Still trying to process some of these folks. Many were rather young and had no parents with them.

I feel that California was blessed to have Jerry Brown back as governor again. He's been a tireless, no-nonsense public servant the likes of which you see less and less these days.
