Anybody still use the old remedies?

Lots of good things come from the aloe plant (Agave). So easy to grow. When we started, we had something like 3-4 tiny Agave plants. Now, I've got them growing everywhere I want.

The agave plant has health benefits including supporting digestive health, reducing inflammation, and boosting the immune. Traditional uses also include wound healing and pain relief.
The saponin compounds in agave possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce swelling and
soothe the body

Poultices made from agave were applied to muscles and joints to relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis
Agave contains vitamins, such as Vitamin B6 and folate, which play a role in immune function and overall well-being
Rich in antioxidants and other phytonutrients, agave helps protect the body from damage caused by free radicals
The gel from agave leaves contains compounds that promote tissue repair, and it has been traditionally used in wound healing

I don't drink tequila but I uderstand it is made from agave.

This just now came to me . . . Coke syrup! We would get a little bottle of it from the pharmacy, then put a little bit over cracked ice and sip it. For the life of me I can't remember what malady it was used for.
I asked my wife and she reminded me that it relieves nausea. It worked very well, too. I wonder if pharmacies still carry this. It was always behind the counter but non-prescription. Maybe a carry-over from the days when drug stores had soda fountains.

What kind of magnesium are all of you taking?
My wife was taking the wrong kind for a long time and it caused her to have loose bowels for the first 3-4 hours after waking in the morning so she mentioned that she found out that there are many different kinds.
We were really surprised when we figured out that it was the magnesium that was causing her problems.
:eek::eek:different kinds, ok now I have to see about this but I don't have an issue yet to cause me worry or frustration but I'd sure like to know now. Thank You I am like Wrong Way Corrigan, so there's a chance I may have the wrong kind :ROFLMAO:

Anyone have a remedy for foot cramps? I know NOT to stretch the foot to a pointed position but bend it back,
But when that begins at 11pm drives me insane.
I wish I did. I get them frequently, mainly when I'm lying in bed. When I start having them, I have to get up and walk it off. Someone told me it was due to dehydration. Even after drinking lots of water, I still get them.

It was suggested to me to take Magnesium in the evenings so I have been taking that. I get the cramps especially if I have been doing longer hours of work in the yard (mowing, raking, leaf blowing). Due to weather I haven't been working out there 4-5 hrs as usual. I haven't gotten any leg/foot cramps so far. The leaves are starting to fall now so the big test is coming up. I plan on drinking lots more water as I work to aid in hydration better and not just before or when the cramps hit. I'll let you know how it works out @TeePee

Things like Vicks or menthol inhalers, nose sprays etc are not great. Was told by a doctor long ago most over do them since the effect is temporary with the menthol winding up being an irritant to the sinus linings. Many sinus issues can use saline solution or salt water spray to clean and moisturize the linings. Dry sinuses also open to infection.

I found trick can only use sparingly with mild sinus infections and that's soak a q-tip in peroxide and clean each nostril using a different q tip. Same for some ear issues.

The trick for sinuses is keep them clean and moist because dry linings crack and let in germs.

From age 3 to 17 I was never taken to a doctor. Infection? Soak in hot water and boric acid. Stomach ache or flu? Blackberry juice. Fever? Aspirin. Chest cold? Vicks, as previously described.

Food was better quality with a lot of home grown vegetables. And wild caught fish and game 3 times a week. And even store bought meat and produce was better quality.

I think my grandparents bought Vicks in the blue jar by the case. Every time I got a cold, grandma would rub it on my chest and I could breathe it in almost all night. If my head was congested she would give me an inhaler to stick in my nose and take deep breaths. The stuff did work and now I have a jar in my medicine cabinet.

We pick a fresh lemon off our tree and squeeze it into warm water , our tree is called “lots a lemons” so it produces lemons all year round ,

in fact I had a ticklish throat yesterday ( think it was a reaction of being told I / we was in close contact with a friend , in her home for 4 hours ) and she told me yesterday she had covid for the 4 th time while we was there ( 10 days ago ) ….., but she didn’t test till the day after we’d been there ~ We’ve never had it …so hope we don’t get it …

I’ve still got a old blue GLASS jar of Vicks I’ve had for about 30 years …..as well as a couple of plastic jars of Vicks @Been There

when I was young, coke syrup was sold in the drug store for a cough remedy. Much later in years, if I had a cold or flu or just under the weather all I wanted was a bottle of coke, warm, open and I would suck on it thru the day. Don't know if it worked or just gave me comfort. But it helped.

Yes, there are 3 kinds. I took Triple Magnesium Complex that I got from Swanson for awhile. It has magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate and magnesium aspartate and supposedly supports nerve, muscle and bone health. Also supposed to reduce tiredness and fatigue.

I had been taking magnesium for some time to help my foot cramps. When I learned the differences, I started trying to get magnesium citrate. I don't know if the magnesium helped. I'm not taking it now. I decided to take a break to see if the cramps got worse and they haven't.

I also take Women's 50+ Multivitamins and it has magnesium but not the max. The additional magnesium that I was taking was still below the max. I don't know if I will take the extra again. While these cramps are painful and frustrating when they come, it's not often.

Vicks vapor rub for chest colds with a warm towel over the chest. Always seemed to help. Had lots of earaches so mom would warm up I think it was called, Save the Baby, and put a drop or two in my ear. Grandpa would sometimes blow cigarette smoke in my ear but I think he was blowing smoke somewhere else because he always smiled when he did this.
God forbid I get constipated because out came the long nozzle bag with a warm soapy mix. I had the cleanest guts in town..😄

I can remember as a young child having an enema treatment because I hadn't been for a couple of days. Mum would get some warm soapy water and pour it into a bag with a tube attached. She then inserted the tube into my rectum and apply the soapy water. She would tell me to wait 5 minutes. It was horrible and I never made it to the toilet on time. We sometimes had to line up and have a teaspoon full of Castor Oil which tasted vile.
My husband used to do a lot of swimming and would sometimes get gluggy ears. Someone told him to buy ear candles to help with the problem. He would lie on the bed, and I would insert the ear candle and light it. He said there was a crackling sound, and he said he went deaf. I couldn't stop laughing looking at the smoke coming out of his ear. It didn't help the cause.

Our grandparents were of the belief that to rid the body of the bad required remedies that rid the body of those bad things. Cod Liver Oil, Muster plasters on your chest, Milk of magnesia, etc etc.
We survived so I can't say they were totally wrong. Maybe they were more right then we care to agree with.
Modern medicine seems to come with a lot of cautions, side effects etc. Here, take this for your kidney issues, but check with your doctor about side effects to your high Blood pressure or liver issues, etc, etc, etc.
We have no doctors that know us anymore. We are blood test and scans. No longer individuals with unique issues, makeup or physical differences. Therein lays the problem for us and for the doctors as well. We no longer connect.
Why, because business took over the medical business.
