Anybody still use the old remedies?

Bummer. On so many levels.
I had health issues about 10 years ago they had me on 100mg of this one medication that was preventing me from losing weight I needed to lose, but would not take me off it due to my heart needed it.
So I opted for bariatric by-pass. Taking my stomach from the size of a football to the size of a golf ball after surgery. Anyone who thinks that type of surgery is an easy way out to lose weight, has no idea what they are talking about.
So anyway, my stomach now has a lot less digressive acids to break down food, so some things like carbonated fluids, vinegar, dense meat (steak, chicken breast and some veggies) can take over a day to digest or come right back up. So I avoid them due to not being able to eat regular meals.
Then 3 years after the surgery I was bit by a tick and couldn't eat mammal meat for 4 years. It's been a party let me tell you.

Half teaspoon baking soda in a little water relieves heartburn.

that is an old one that I had to start using a few years ago. Probably from all the Excedrin that I have taken over the years, and still take lol.

That stuff is unbelievable and works like magic. It sure beats spending money on any of the antacids that are on the market. They are too expensive and most of them barely work anyway. I am so glad I remembered about the baking soda that my English grandmother used and that my SIL’s mom also used.

not sure, but i was remembering my father used to take Brioschi Effervescent. Big blue jar of it that he used to mix with water. apparently it was for upset stomach.
He also used Parke Davis throat discs. We ate them like candy.
Horehound cough drops. Disgusting but we ate them like candy.
Also used to love St. Joseph's aspirin. yum.

I used to be in awe of people who had candy dishes on the table. We would gobble those up in a second.

ooooo can't do pickle juice, pickle days are long gone. but I will pass it on to hubby as he gets them too.
I empathize, one of many things my digestive track now says 'NO!' to--not as unpleasantly as when i had an ulcer at 18- but firmly, clearly.

To think i used to eat whole Kosher Dills as a snack now i have to be stingy with the relish in tuna, egg and pasta salad.

I love pickles though I don't think to eat them often.

They are one of many things i can no longer enjoy due to various food intolerances and outright allergies to some chemicals that arose post menopause. Up until menopause i ate all fresh veggies and fruits with impunity. Now raw bell peppers cause indigestion and if i exceed more then a couple of slices of raw tomato in less than 3 days i get sore spots on my tongue and if exceed the limit greatly my lingual tonsils can swell.

For a while i had strong reaction to dairy and gluten but once divorced from DH #3 and moderating my intake of 'too much' in too short a time i can at least have them again. i missed dark breads (dark rye, pumpernickel) most. i suspect stress was huge factor in that cause they cleared up quickly after a year of moderation and not having to deal with him daily.

I had used similar strategy to get over the ulcer decades before-cut out all problematic foods for about 6 months then slowly reintroduced them in small amounts with at least a full day of no problematic ones in between. In 5 yrs i was married to 1st husband and eating his curries at least once a week. When we went to his family's farm in Guyana, my MIL's curries were too hot for me, couldn't taste/enjoy the flavors of the ingredients due to the heat, but they caused no stomach problems.

@AnneTeak I remember those awful tasing horehound cough drops🤢

What I did like, and evidently they took it off the market because it was becoming abusive was Cherokol cough syrup. I loved the taste of that stuff lol.

I used to tell mom I had a sore throat when I didn’t, but she caught onto me and wouldn’t give it to me. She was not one of those moms who would feed me something with codeine in it just to put me to sleep. I had no idea what codeine was back then I just knew the cough syrup tasted really good.🤸🏾‍♀️🤸🏾‍♀️

Vicks Vaporub for the win! If that doesn't cure you, it's time to call the undertaker. I also rub it on the bottom of my feet and put on socks to help with a bad cough. I have no idea why that works, but it really helps.

I wish an old patent medicine that my mom used to dose us with still existed. It was called WOW (Wonder of the World) and it came in a little blue bottle. Main ingredients were cajuput oil and oil of eucalyptus. She'd put a few drops of that on a spoon of sugar and give it to us for croup or bad congestion. It really works. Tasted like something coming out of the steam vents of hell, though. I'll remember that taste til my dying day. Arrrghhputttt....

When I lived in Michigan, I'd get the "Detroit Cough" that started in November and lasted until April. Nothing over-the-counter would help a Detroit Cough. At least not in the U.S. However, we could run over to Windsor, Canada, and buy bottles of 2-2-2 Cough Syrup that had codeine. A healthy slug of that could get you a night's rest.

I have had a cold and sore throat for about a week now and a doctor just prescribed an antibiotic for the sore throat.
Most of the time when I have a sore throat it tests positive for strep.
I was getting so congested that I was having a harder time breathing.
This evening I remembered that my Mother used to smear Vicks Mentholatum on my chest and neck to help relieve congestion when I was a child.
I am doing that now plus smearing it on my nostrils.
I told my wife today that it wouldn’t help to try to do any breathing exercises until I got rid of some of this congestion.
I just read where some people are saying that Vicks doesn’t actually clear out congestion but that the menthol in it tricks your brain into thinking that you breath easier.
I think that is ridiculous. Trick or no trick I am breathing easier now!
I want to revise my statement about Vicks Mentholatum. What I used was Vicks Vaporub. I went ahead and ordered a jar of the Mentholatum and this new stuff doesn’t smell like the old did. Maybe Amazon just sent me a jar with vasoline in it or something because this new jar of Mentholatum just doesn’t have the smell or the warmth that the old stuff had.
