Home Internet price just went up, any tips?

My home internet just went up $20/month, from $65 to $85 for 250 Mbps. I only use internet for web browsing, uploading photos to a blog, no gaming or anything else. I checked with my cell phone provider but they can only offer LITE service and that doesn’t sound worth the cost. Anyone have any other ideas?

Everytime my internet goes up I call and plead financial hardship, "there has to be something you can do, I'm not able to afford the new rate, I'm a senior on a fixed income..blah, blah, blah". They always are able to adjust my rate, they either give me a monthly credit, or a new plan rate, or once a made up senior discount. That rate is usually good for a year and then they raise the price and I call again. Same thing happens with my trash pickup, they raise the rate and I have to call and negotiate it back down.

That's where you should start, call your present provider and ask about any discounts or any other way to lower your rate

Sometimes you're stuck if there is a monopoly in your area. Once I had to cancel my service for 30 days then start over at the introductory rate of $49. But it climbed back up to $89. However some communities have little known companies that offer affordable service for seniors and low income citizens that aren't advertised widely if at all. They often posted at community centers and libraries.

Can you bundle your phone and internet? I have T-Mobile and have both with them along with a senior discount.
I currently pay $100 for both and I have internet/wifi when all my neighbors cable goes out on a regular basis.
See if T-Mobile internet is offered in your area. I signed a contract 3 years ago and it states the price of $50/month will not go up (and it hasn't). The $50 is contingent on auto-pay, which I don't do, so I pay an extra fee of $5 a month, a total of $55.

Thanks for the tip. I have T-mobile for my cell phone, but I didn’t know they provide home internet service. I’ll research.

Ugh!

I guess I should consider myself lucky to only get hit with a $5 increase. But it seems to me that do this happens a lot more often than once a year. It's hard to track because I usually don't get any notification. It just shows up one day in a bigger bill.

And as for offering me a $10 discount if I give them my banking info so that they can take out whatever they feel like when ever they feel like it, they can stuff that where the sun don't shine.

Oh, that's what it's called!!! Yep, got one of those just today as I was paying bills. Okay, electric company, why don't you just tuck that little yellow "Notice of Proposed Rate Change" in there with all the junk papers in the envelope... maybe no one will notice.

Funniest part is: "There are three ways to challenge the rate change."
1. File a formal complaint
2. Send the PUC a letter stating why you object.
3. Be a witness at a public input hearing.

They forgot to end that section with "yeah, but good luck with that, sucker!"

Interestingly enough today, just one day after getting the notice of a rate increase, my internet has started cutting on and off.

Our internet gets so slow during long weekends / school holidays / Christmas time , its not worth $95 a month
to be honest ( it’s just gone up from $80 to ~ $95 ) ..I live in a country area in South Australia ~~ that gets swamped with tourists in warmer months, mainly due to being a beachside area

Our has been cutting on and off since the price increase @Trade ( it was on the news recently that our provider had been fined a substantial amount of $$$ for “ slowing down “ our internet 🛜 )

We are going away at Christmas and rely on our Internet ~ to operate our watering system / home security.

but in new year will be looking for a cheaper provider.

internet and cable tv here is $161 and i consider that a bargain. the other provider was charging twice that.
when my parents passed, the other provider made me submit their death certificates. it really was "til death do us part"

My brother just got T-Mobile and his speeds are faster than my Comcast internet. He bundled it with his phones and still spends less than me. He is within 1,000' of a tower which is why he gets full 5G speeds. It drops off the further away you get..

Race Communications just gouged us for another $9.99 a month. No reason given, I guess they just wanted more money and knew they could get away with it.
Been hearing terrible things about Race Comm; I guess they're trying to get established in our area and are doing a terrible job of it: rude staff (when you can manage to even get ahold of anybody to talk to), they keep saying their svc will start soon & leaving people's yards dug up for the cable or whatever but the svc still hasn't started and of course you get no answer or call back from anybody, one person who saw a Race Comm. van go by even flagged them down & asked for help getting ahold of somebody at the company and the driver was surly and rude, "I can't help you!" and drove away.

In this area Race Communications is responsive to customer requests. Nobody has been rude, but I did get the "I can't help you!" onetime when I stopped by the local office. I guess they have a strict division between the customer service people and the technical staff.

I guess they must've spent all their competency and politeness in your area then, @Nathan, lol, because last I heard is that here there still isn't one single customer who's been hooked up & is using Race, just torn up yards but no sign of installers or customer service. I wonder if they're getting ready to go bankrupt? I hope not for your sake.

An update: I just read on nextdoor.com that a guy in this area who signed up with them six months (!) ago, they came and tore up his lawn, and still can't get it going for him, six months ago.

Yea, I hope not as well. Race has blistering fast gigabit internet here, a real treat after years of putting up with Verizon's ultra slow and ancient copper network. If Race goes bankrupt I would expect one of the local telecoms will buy them up, probably the ever crummy Frontier Internet.

We have google fiber available here, and have had that for our internet provider for the last several years now. They sent out a mail letter with an offer for something called Neighborhood Internet (or some similar name) and it is just over $20 each month, the lowest plant they offer, but it works perfectly for my internet use. I don’t know if they have this available everywhere or not, and it is not the very high speed connection that they also offer that costs more, but it works fine for me and the cost has not gone up at all.

I currently have a bundle with Spectrum, 85 for 1 GB internet, and 75 for two mobile phones. No entertainment packages, but I think they throw in local TV and some sort of entertainment service.

Update to my original post! I called Cox and they gave me a new plan with greater speed (300 thingys rather than 250) and at less cost than I’d been paying! Go figure! My new bill will be ~$56. Will wonders never cease!
