I think you all get it wrong when it comes to making a Shepherd's Pie

well it wouldn't be shepherds pie if it didn't have lamb in it..:ROFLMAO:.

Shepherds = sheep=lamb

Cottage pie = beef...
That's correct, but not the whole truth. Shepherds pie can also be made with hogget or mutton.
As a Kiwi farmer, the first time I ate lamb was while visiting family in England. They were apologetic about serving me New Zealand lamb, they were also stunned to hear that I'd never eaten lamb before. Lamb was a premium cash export so we usually ate hogget (last year's lamb) or mutton. On my return to NZ I insisted that we would have a new season lamb for Christmas.

That was the wet ingredient in Granmamas Sheperd's Pie.
Delicious. 😋
she should have not made such dry lamb then..lol.....tomato sauce indeed...tsk !

A kiwi farmer... ?how fab.... (y)

yes well it's all lamb isn't it..:sneaky:. but here in the Uk it's very unlikely to be anything but lamb,rather than older mutton etc..

Lamb in the Uk is the most expensive red meat..pound for pound..always has been... unless we're buying something like a leg of lamb which is almost all bone, as you know... ... then its cheaper... but most people can't afford lamb here... and it's almost always NZ lamb..

Pre-Covid when we used to share rearing sheep, we used to keep them for up to two years before slaughter. I really prefer hogget when I can get it, but that's not easy. The easiest source of mutton for us is the Asian supermarket in the city. It has an in-store butchery and if you're OK with Halal meat, their mutton is a reasonable price. Tesco is selling lamb at half price, so we have our freezers well stocked.
