Why Is Dancing So Stupid?

On an old thread "Who Were your Top Three favorite Cartoon Characters?", maybe this post by the OP reflects in some way where he is coming from, haha...

Yesterday, Saturday, at our most upscale urban retail mall, a pair of talented musicians entertained the large crowds with some melodic popular Classic Rock tunes. I was the only person, except for an excited couple of tykes. in the front, not inhibited or afraid to get up and dance in front of everyone else. Why? Because I can and am talented enough that no one ever comes up and says anything, even if they or their friends personally would feel stupid doing so. At least for me, it is the most exhilarating visceral movement fun with the exception of skiing, so am a regular catalyst to get others standing up on their feet.

I have danced all my life, I attended a dance school as part of my regular education as a child, and I always wated to dance professionally and never got the chance..

However we do have our own dancing couple on the forum, in the shape of @horseless carriage ..and his wife... who have taken part in many dance competions over the decades...

Such a compliment, thank you kind lady.

My girlfriend and I went dancing every Saturday night at the Trocadero, here in Sydney. It was social dancing and we met some
very nice young men. I was never good as a dancer, but it was easy to follow our partners. Later on, after many years, I loved
dancing with my husband, slow dancing was our speciality.

You probably think it's stupid 'cause you can't dance. Dancing can be expressive and beautiful (ballet, modern Jazz) or it can be a downright fun stress reliever. Dancing can show off how athletic people are too. I love to dance and even at 78, still get compliments on my dancing, though I'm never over the top, just cool with my moves. I also get a kick out of seeing the flash mob dances. I've been meaning to research why it is we feel the urge to dance (besides having music move us).

I had the pleasure of seeing the Alvin Ailey Dancers decades ago.

You rock lady, I love your description: "downright fun stress reliever."

The joy of dance is a universal and powerful form of self-expression and physical release. It serves as a shortcut to happiness by allowing individuals to let go of inhibitions, relieve stress, and live fully in the present moment.

Line dancing looks stupid, like calisthenics. And country 2 step dances.look redundant.
I used to square dance but could not remember the steps
and got to hate it. A lot of socalled dancing is just moving around your body, which is not proper
dancing to real dancers. AND most people are not very good, especially me, so it can look uncoordinated.
Now professional free style dancing is altogether different, an art form. And ice skating dances, very hard to do well.
You can't compare yourself to entertainers.

Regardless of whether line dancing resembles calisthenics, the country two step looks redundant, or so-called dancing is simply just moving your body around, it all takes rhythm. If one can’t keep the beat and have rhythm, one is going to look like a POS, even if one is doing the so-called professional dances.

whether or not ”—-most people are not very good—“, is by whose definition and a matter of opinion. My opinion is I used to see a lot of people on the Friday night dance floors that had good rhythm and maybe they weren’t doing the dance in the most stylistic manner, but they were keeping the beat and that’s all it counts.

Dancing, like music, is pure joy to some of us. I have always loved to dance, and will continue to do so - whenever I can - for as long as I can.

I think some people can be intimidated by it - and that causes them to have negative thoughts ... which is sad. It's a VERY liberating feeling!

"Dance like no one is watching!"

I'm not really good at dancing and I don't really care for it much. I did however enjoy the Just Dance games I had for my Nintendo Wii for quite some time til my lungs got worse. I like it ok as exercise but that's about it.

Thank you for the lovely compliment kind Sir. I love your post about the joy of dance and the picture of you and Mrs. H.C. "getting down". Look at you...they gave you two the floor! Very, very cool.

Shuffle Dance is now popular on the internet, there are even some videos of how to do some of the basic moves. It's something you have to learn. You can't just get out there and move your body. It's very energetic, and if you did it 30 minutes a day, you'd be in great shape.
