Eggnog at Holiday times~

I’m a big fan of eggnog.

When we were kids our mother always made us a glass of this simple eggnog when we were sick. I still use this basic recipe during the holidays with the addition of some heavy whipping cream in place of part of the milk.

Eggnog for one
1 cup milk
1 large egg
1 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
grated nutmeg

Whirl in a blender and add a shot of booze if you like.

Byrne Dairy is the local cult favorite, along with peppermint flavored milk.

My mother made that for me to get protein in when I was being picky. 🙂

I love eggnog but I don't buy it because I'd be tempted to drink too much of it. I doubt I'll be attending any holiday parties where I could get a glass of it. I also love eggnog ice cream, which I haven't seen in a long time. I may pick up a quart of eggnog, now that you mention it. My blood sugar is being controlled better and I'll have to just control myself. :)
Ooh, eggnog ice cream........must buy..........
I turn into a robot when my mind hears certain things. 😊

We used to make our own eggnog every year and it was always very good. I knew there was some small risk of SALMONELLA, but I'd eaten raw egg in one form or another for years so I didn't worry about it.

Then, in the 1990s, I contracted salmonella (not from raw egg but from unwashed produce at a restaurant). Believe me, this disease is NOT something you ever want to experience. The Cleveland Clinic says only one in 20,000 eggs contains salmonella but I'll never risk it again!

Before you give up try making a cooked drinking custard, basically a pasteurized version of eggnog that can be made a day ahead and left in the fridge to chill.
