Having issues with right shoulder...no cartilidge in joint. Been getting cortisone shots. Had one today. Can get one every three months. Lots of pain, and shots help some. But I am not sure how often I can get them before needing surgery. Really painful and hard to sleep. Shoulder replacement is harder than hips. Any one had one??

I haven't had a replacement but I did have surgery in 2010. I had an "impingement" (causing severe pain and poor range of motion) and they had to saw a bit off the end of my collarbone. It was all done through three small holes and after PT, I was back to normal and full range of motion in about three months.

Now the other shoulder is doing the same thing. I had a couple months of PT in the spring but it didn't do much good. I think I'm going to have to have surgery.

What helped me was stem cell. My shoulder was so bad we all hoped for 50% recovery at best; I just wanted the burning to go away so I could sleep.

1. I ended up with about 90% recovery and no burning . Keep in mind I still jockey a few hundred
pounds of horse feed every ten or so days, and 50# bales of hay every couple of days.

2. The bad news with stem cell is there is no insurance that will pay for it, and it isn’t cheap. My shoulder cost $3,000 6? or so years ago.

3. The good news is there was virtually no down time. I could carry on with house work, but light duty at the barn for a few days; that meant brushing the horses and just lifting flakes of hay instead of an entire bale.

4. The best news the burning pain was gone before I went to bed that first night Of the injection.

5. If you consider this route, go to a legitimate doctor or get a recommendation from a well qualified chiropractor. Just like traditional surgery, It is not something to mess around with.

I've had cortisone injections in several places in my body, I'm told more than 3 a year destroys the tissue so doctors are loathe to do any more than that...

I know someone that had that same treatment. His was an unmitigated success.

He's Native American. His tribe paid for it.

I have osteoarthritis in both shoulders, bone on bone, nothing to be done except shoulder replacement surgery which I don't want at my advanced age. But here's what's strange: It started in my right shoulder and for years my left shoulder was perfectly fine. Then eventually, the left shoulder got it too. But it lightened up in the right shoulder and now is nearly gone. I have no idea why.

It's mainly a problem when trying to find a comfortable position to sleep. I guess lying in bed puts lots of pressure on the shoulders. During the day, I barely notice it. Lidocaine patches help at night. They are OTC now.

@Marie5656

Sorry to hear your on-going problems, .... from UTI and recently an injury to your face from accidentaly fell between TV and bookcase.
I don't have shoulder pain, but as I said before I fractured the heel of my right foot and still in process to full recovery. It's been two months now.

According my Orth.doc there is no surgery which is fine to me, as long as I can walk with cane or walker. He said surgery is very 'risky' because of advanced age. I need to wait another weeks or a month to walk again.

In my guess, probably there is no surgery for you like me, .... advanced age.

Hopefully, Orth.doc offers you a good remedy without surgery..
