She's 75 and getting evicted

Seniors have been the fast-growing group at the poverty level for a number of years now, and I expect it to get worse with the shredding of our already flimsy national safety net of social services.

I remember how the stories of elderly having to eat dog food because it was all they could afford, as one of the arguments for establishing Medicare. Bankruptcies caused by medical expenses had become common, and dropped substantially after Medicare was started. Sadly, the trend has been going upwards for some years now, and will probably only increase.
 
There is a senior living community close to me, which serves residents aged 62 and older. It has income restrictions, with maximum annual incomes of $30,000 to $35,000.

I think we need more of these types of places. I walk through the area from time to time, it is kept up very nicely.
 
The day you move in is the day you need to think about what you will do when itā€™s time to move out.

Where I live, a landlord isnā€™t under any obligation to renew a lease at the end of the term.

They do have to provide 30-90 days notice depending on how long you have been a tenant.

The city is currently looking at requiring a landlord to provide a valid reason to not renew but that doesnā€™t really do much, there are a million valid reasons why a landlord might not care to renew a lease.

Actually, itā€™s not much different for homeowners that are unable to pay taxes, water, sewer, upkeep, etcā€¦. it just takes longer to be squeezed out.

About all any of us can do is keep our eyes open and have a plan that fits our situation.

That 88 year old man worked for general motors and then they stopped giving him his pension. His wife was sick. They had to sell the house. 88, working 5 days a week. Luckily he could help him.

I can't speak for the reasons for eviction in the USA.of course.. but I can say that not so long ago I mentioned on here about how I;d heard people lose their homes because they've been presented with a big medical bill.and I was told in no uncertain terms by a female member ''that almost never happens'.. that i shouldn't believe the media.... etc...

I have to say.. having watched the many videos on not just the homeless in general such as the drug addicts.. but the massive ''grey'' homeless living in cars and mobile homes in the USA... I was surprised at her comment tbh...

I remember walking into the Management Office of my Senior apartments a couple years ago, and walked into a woman in the process of being evicted.
My mind was reeling for herā€¦.. she was probably about 75 too. ā€¦. she was crying and wanting someone to help her.

I donā€™t know what happened to her, but I could never forget that day. It was awful.

Don't believe everything you read on AI without verifiable source. Many statements from AI are just its hallucinations. I have said in another thread that, if AI is a real human being, this person would be in jail or be rejected by the society already. There is a case where a depressed teenager in San Francisco, committed suicide. During the process, chatgpt told this teenager not to tell the mother. This mothe filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.

There is Medicare for people above poverty line and Medicaid for people below poverty line. What's the problem?

Depending on what you mean by "taking careā€. No the government will not babysit you. But the programs are there for you to utilize them. And there are social workers and case managers to coordinate things for a fee, billable to you or to the goverment social service.

I'm assuming that because GM declared bankruptcy they were allowed to take away pensions to remain solvent. If I recall, they were bailed out by the government during the Great Recession in 2008. Pensions have very different rules in the US vs. the UK. Sad state of affairs.
