This is not something I have ever entertained doing.
The risk is criminal record and being barred from the store.

Ethically and legally challenged to say the least. And they probably do more than just cheat at checkout. That's just sad! Yet another thing that speaks to the lack of integrity in so many people in our society.
They need to be reminded there are reason why in some cultures they used to cut off one's hand for stealing. Or that gangsters kill those who steal from them. It's not just about some pesky law there is a real disdain for stealing. It’s really sad that one in four feel it’s ok to steal. Excuses don’t make it right.
Not me either. Though I guess it's possible I occasionally made a legitimate mistake.
The checkout workers also make mistakes. I don't worry too much about it, because sometimes they might overcharge, and sometimes they may under charge, and I won't argue about it unless it's like getting charged $50 for a bag of Oreo Cookies. I just glance at the receipt and if the total is in the ballpark, I'm OK.well that is possible - also possible of course that we make a legitimate mistake and over charge ourselves. I guess they would likely even out.
I'm close behind you, Lew. I'll be hitting 92 in a few days.It is from 2 yrs. (soon to be 3), ago, when I was thank all for the lovely milestone birthday celebration on my 90th.
No doubt @WhatInThe How silly would it be to have to go to jail for cheating a store out of $2.99!Ethically and legally challenged to say the least. And they probably do more than just cheat at checkout.

I hate that AI says the kids "learn" to cheat in school as though the teachers are telling them to do it and instructing them on how. Later it says "reasons" which is closer but framed as excuses.Google AI Overview
Students learn to cheat in public schools
due to intense academic pressure, peer influence, fear of failure, lack of understanding of material, poor time management, and the normalization of dishonest behavior, often facilitated by technology like smartphones and AI, creating a cycle where cheating feels necessary or trivial, despite knowing it's wrong, especially when school culture prioritizes grades over genuine learning. This habit often starts young, with some elementary kids even admitting to it, and becomes ingrained as students progress, influenced by high-stakes testing and a perceived lack of teacher enforcement.
Key Reasons Students Cheat:
I understand why this may have bothered you Della, but I think you may have taken the meaning wrong.I hate that AI says the kids "learn" to cheat in school as though the teachers are telling them to do it and instructing them on how. Later it says "reasons" which is closer but framed as excuses.
Kids may begin to cheat in school (that's where they are most of the time) but it doesn't mean, as the article implies, that schools cause cheating anymore than stores cause shop-lifting.
This article is making excuses for them and blaming everything except the child who cheats. We should be firmly letting children know that it is wrong and shameful to cheat, far more wrong and shameful than a bad grade. I still remember that Ted Kennedy cheated in college, but I couldn't tell you what any politician's grades were.
