I am sorry for your loss. We have 4 hens. The guy that deer hunts our property came over this afternoon and gifted us some meat and said he saw a fox while hunting this year. We let the hens free range and Misa says she wants more chicks this spring. IDK, I hope they stay safe. We have lost 6 this year. We do love the fresh eggs.
We are down to 3, now. Yummy was the Matriarch. Even as she started to fade, she maintained her position.....none of the others would mess with her, or challenge her.
The Girls have mostly stopped laying eggs, we only get about one or two a week. They seem to have been stressed too much, neighbors dogs, extreme cold, etc. The fresh eggs were nice, but we have them as pets, so the eggs were just a bonus.
Funny story:
We had a family of foxes move in just this summer. We only let The Girls free range if we are there with them (helps to discourage hawks, etc), but I was worried about them anyway. One evening, Dio, Goober (our cat) and I were standing around when a fox stepped out of the woods right in front of us. I guess it didn't know we were there.
My first reaction was to try to grab Goober, before the fox got him. I never got the chance....Goober took off after the fox. He chased it clear off of the property, and we never saw it again!!!!

Hmmmmmm, makes me wonder what he did to the rest of the fox family.....
