French film legend Brigitte Bardot has died at 91, the Bardot foundation announced on Sunday. Bardot starred in more than 50 movies during her career before leaving the film industry to concentrate on animal rights activism. Bardot became a controversial figure in her later decades, with public comments and writing that led to five convictions for inciting hatred.

During her youth, she was the ultimate sex symbol whose voluptuous figure and libertine lifestyle sent tremors through the straitlaced 1950s, but Bardot soon tired of the male gaze and walked away from it all to care for animals.

In her brief film career, Bardot enjoyed a string of popular successes, without garnering much critical acclaim.

Most of her 50-odd films were fun but forgettable flops – with a few exceptions.

In 1956 she set the screen alight as an 18-year-old caught up in a love triangle in "And God Created Woman", directed by her then husband Roger Vadim.

I think it's an astonishing achievement on her part, that she made mainly B movies, and most people say they've never seen one of her films... yet everybody knows who she is...

possibly, and in recent years she's been a bit of a hateful person making comments against all sorts of sections of the populace


Her controversial remarks have appeared in her books and on her foundation's website. Some key examples include:

• Muslims and Immigration: Bardot has frequently criticized the Muslim community and immigration. She stated that Muslims are "destroying our country by imposing their ways".
• She has also referred to France being "invaded by an overpopulation of foreigners, especially Muslims" and has declared herself "against the Islamisation of France". She also deplored the ritual slaughter of animals for Eid al-Adha, calling it an "abominable trade". In 2021, she was fined for referring to inhabitants of Reunion as "aboriginals who have kept the genes of savages".
• LGBTQ+ Community: Bardot has also made homophobic comments. In her 2003 book, she contrasted her "close gay friends" with contemporary homosexuals, using derogatory language. She also referred to some gay people behaving like "fairground freaks" and made negative remarks about transgender people.
• General Humanity and Family: Bardot has expressed disdain for humanity, stating she "hate most of the human species" and prefers animals. She has also made highly controversial remarks about her own family, referring to her son as a "cancerous tumor" in her memoirs.

Bardot has been convicted and fined six times for inciting racial hatred. While she has sometimes offered apologies in court, stating it was "not in her character" to hurt anyone, she has also been a public supporter of the far-right French nationalist party National Rally.

And... well, if I'm being honest, I'll admit she's one of those people I thought had passed years ago.

I know little about her acting and her being a "sex symbol" but I greatly admired her for her animal activism.

unfortunately she deliberately made these statements to the media.....she was very controversial

I always considered her a sex symbol. And she carried that off quite well. I was just finishing high school when she appeared on the scene, so I didn't need to know more about her than that. I knew nothing of her activism or her divisive comments later on.

I thought she was very beautiful too. She was not the only one. Other exotic beauties of that time were Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren. They all seemed so exotic to a teenage Aussie girl.
