Should I Do This?

I live comfortably in a third floor walk up.

It forces a bit of exercise, the summer breeze and view are nice, there are not many burglars climbing in the windows.

Check your lease and understand what happens if your circumstances change.

Old people are a protected class where I live, in Central New York, and if I need to break the lease to go to some sort of assisted living facility there is no penalty.
 

Here is a copy of a work order I sent the management here for this place I am presently in. I am only sending the complaints with no other personal stuff. Tell me what you all think.

1. The removal of all kitchen cabinets as to the fact that the present ones are off level, making all drawers and cabinet doors very difficult to open. It is apparent that the floor is shifting. Also the removal of present countertops and replacement with new countertops.-.re leveling of kitchen counters -tops. The re- painting of the kitchen.

2. Heat to be upgraded and in working condition in the bedroom. The entire time I have lived here it has not worked, a fact which has been pointed out several times.

3. The removal of the vanity in the bathroom. I use a walking device and the vanity hinders my being able to use the sink. I contacted my Doctor as per management request and the office told me management did not order a request for the removal of the vanity. I will be happy to ask for another written request from my Doctor.

4. A stopper for the kitchen sink is needed.

5. Replacement of the electrical outlet in the hallway between the bathroom and the kitchen. It has not been usable as it is too tight to insert a plug into.

6. Either a new hot water heater or new elements for the present one are needed. The water never gets hot enough to wash a sink full of dinner dishes, nor does the water get and stay to a warm/hot enough temperature to take a full shower before getting cold. This has been brought to the attention of management and maintenance many times with no resolution. This is very important and needs to be settled quickly.

I thank you in advance for any and all attention given to this work order. It is essential that I receive an answer by January 5, 2026 at 3pm
 

@dusty The new place sounds much better than your current home. Moving can be daunting and sometimes the easiest thing is to stay where you are but, it does sound as though the move would be worth it. If I were you, I think I would jump at the chance to move to a newer, bigger and better maintained property. As there is a lift in the new property, the third floor location shouldn't be a problem.

All those valid complaints and no action by management. They can say anything to keep you; I wouldnā€™t believe them. The quality of their service is subpar.

Iā€™d be giving the new place an acceptance form immediately. Ask if a bottom floor space comes up, if youā€˜d be given priority to move to it. You may find out you like being on the third floor.

Unfortunately, in the building I worked in for years (a state building), the elevators broke down a lot; so that students that used wheelchairs had to wait for the fire dept. to get there so that they and their chairs could be carried up or down the stairs. And I guess because it wasn't a building-on-fire type emergency, the fire dept. didn't seem to hurry much to get there. So that's one reason I'd never live on the 2nd-or-higher floor anywhere around here.

That's right. Being on the first floor often has this disadvantage of difficult noise from above, especially above the bedroom.

Brand new sounds so much better than an older building,
especially with the old one not being maintained properly.

As several others have said, you could make a window box table (like a narrow sofa or foyer table) in front of your window and fill it with indoor flowers and plants. Not the same as outside flowers but doable. I glanced quickly over your pros/cons list and immediately wanted the new apartment. šŸ˜„

My only 2 concerns were inconvenient mail access and the possibility of broken down elevators. However, everything that you shared about the new place makes it worth the adjustment to me. What really sold me was the amazing space increase! 425 sq ft---new place 700 sq ft. šŸ’£šŸ’„

Good luck to you and congrats on getting such a swift reply and apartment offer in 1 month. That is spectacular! šŸŽ‰šŸŖ“šŸŽŠ

I would definitely move, for that list of reasons That you wrote.

Plus, BTW, southern exposure is nice, but eastern exposure is a view of sunrises, and western exposure is a view of sunsets.
And all windows that don't leak, give daylight.

I completely agree. Look at all the things you are listing off to get fixed, many of them, they already know about. If they cared about you as a tenant, theyā€™d have fixed them. Itā€™s too bad, but it seems like you want to stay in your old apartment. You canā€™t even take a hot shower.

Yesterday afternoon I had to wash my hair on tepid water and then ran out of hot water before shower was finished. To get a full shower I have to tun the water off while showering so I can be sure I get clean.

So many reasons to want to move out.
Are you hoping that if you tell your current landlord that you are looking and found a new place nicer than yours that heā€™ll smarten up and fix up your apartment, pronto!?

I would be snatching that new apartment right away, and before someone else does.

May be by the time you decide...they may have something available on the bottom floor. šŸ¤ž
 
That you have that many things on your work order is concerning. Why weren't they kept up with? Will they be dealt with in a timely manner? Allowing an apartment or building to go into disrepair does not speak well of your landlord. I hope you chose the new apartment! You will have enough extra room to grow plants and maybe even treat yourself to flowers sometimes. Since the new place is new, hopefully you won't have to worry about a broken elevator any time soon.

It seems obvious that the new place would be a big improvement. Once you move, you'll wonder why you stayed in that poorly maintained place so long. Obviously, the landlord (or corporation) has no interest in accommodating you.

One thing to keep in mind is that no place is going to be 100% perfect. If you're waiting for every detail to be the way you want it, you'll be waiting forever.

No flower boxes, no bird feeders, no flags, and all window covering seen from the exterior must be white on the new place. Bummer.

Is the water heater in your apartment? If so you may want to check (or have checked) the temperature setting, maybe it can be turned up a bit, very simple adjustment.

Been there, done that. The mainenace guy was here in the building 3 months ago and he popped in. He said he didn't know what was wrong with it. I told him it was either dying or needed new elements. He left, saying he would be right back and I never saw him again.
