Bringing back cursive writing

At my elementary school in New York, misbehaving children were swatted with a wooden paddle. In front of the class. Physically painful and emotionally humiliating.
Today's education professionals recognize that inflicting pain and humiliation is a grossly ignorant and counter-productive educational "tool".

I mean, other than AI. This says nothing about dementia, BTW.

My children were monitored closely. Other than headaches neither had serious issues, and that was resolved by a change in meds. They're both average height and neither wears glasses. No seizures.
That's great.
It's merely my opinion that caution should reign, that the chemistry of a child's brain should not be altered with drugs.
Dementia may take many years to be noticed. It's increasing in the population, no-one knows why --maybe drugs, maybe environmental toxins, maybe longer lifespans, maybe not.
Remember that the lobotomy was accepted by professionals too, as the Kennedys can attest.

oh my goodness!! Your calligraphy is beautiful 💐💐
Thank you, I appreciate your compliment. The style, taught at school, by the way, is known as Italic Script and is achieved using a pen with a chisel like, broad nib:

Your comment at the start of this thread: "Cursive writing is making a significant comeback in U.S. schools." It made me wonder what will those children use to write by hand? My guess is it will be the ubiquitious ball point pen, possibly pencil if they start young, I would like to think that one day a new generation know how to use a fountain pen. nowadays pens like mine, that have a bladder that holds the ink, have been replaced with an ink cartridge, no more ink stained fingers. But even so, learning to write by hand is a skill that takes time but is worth it. There will come a time when those youngsters seek employment:

A handwritten letter takes time, thought, and deliberate effort, which can signal high motivation and a genuine interest in the specific company. In an era of generic, AI-generated, or cookie-cutter emails, a physical, handwritten note is rare, intimate, and memorable. Some employers believe handwriting reveals personality traits like honesty, creativity, and attention to detail. It can be effective when hand-delivering a resume for a small, family-owned business, or in creative fields where a personal touch is valued.

(I'M SORRY IF I'M RUNNING OFF TOPIC, Imogene, but) learning a new language is the number one, prime, best exercise (I understand) to create new brain pathways and fight dementia.
I believe it. The other day I was trying to teach myself the lyrics to this song and just the few foreign words seemed so hard for me. Back in the day, I got A's in Spanish. That part of my brain must be the first part to atrophy.

I do not believe in mind-altering medications for children to make the parent's /teacher's job easier.
I don't know why we're discussing this, it's irrelevant. You guys have had it all your own way for so many years now, no-one even remembers anything else. No point in beating a dead horse.
I don't beat any horses, dead or alive. 😄

But I think corporal punishment, especially in school, is barbaric. I was so happy to have grown up and taught school in New Jersey, where corporal punishment is strictly banned, and has been for a very long time, even before I started school in the 1940's. Somehow we managed to have civilized classrooms and a high level of education, without the brutalization.

LOL, I remember that song from waaaaay back! The words Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen are Yiddish, probably also German. They mean "According to me, you are beautiful."
Later in the song, Belle and Bella are French and I think Italian.

Of course Wunderbar is German.

And (thanks to my wonderful cleaning lady, who is teaching me Spanish,") De nada means "You're welcome!" I threw that last one in for free.

"De nada" literally means, "of nothing."

I had some sort of attention disorder back when the condition was called, "day dreams in class." It was on every report card I ever got and I was constantly in trouble with the teacher. One day my fifth grade teacher was yelling at me and said since I was the only girl and the youngest child of my lovely mother I probably never had a spanking in my life. The boy who lived next door piped up, "Only every day." That was about the truth, I was whipped far more than the boys, believe me corporal punishment does not work.

I'm so sorry you suffered that for something that was completely out of your control.

I am left handed and my penmanship is not great. I do use a Dr. Grip pen which is a fat pen that enhanced writing stability and is fast drying. This helps a little bit.
My neighbor was a school teacher. She has the most beautiful handwriting. She loves to send cards and I love to receive them!
Not too long ago, I ordered this cursive handwriting handbook on Amazon in order to improve my writing.

At my school we learned the Palmer Method and my handwriting looks exactly like this sample, even today. Cursive doesn't just look nice, it's much faster than printing because you don't lift your pen and stop except at the end of words.

I respect and admire beautiful handwriting. That said, I could practice every day for 25 years and would never attain handwriting like the above. That's why I employ a print/cursive hybrid.

Not everyone does everything well. When we know we're falling short, we figure out "good enough" work-arounds.

Exactly. My pretty handwriting has often blurred the evidence of my bad spelling.

There is still a full generation lacking in this basic skill. Mrs. Nedro would have used her ruler on me if I hadn't learned to write in cursive up to her standard. Maybe they should teach that same group how to make change at the cash register.
I know Mrs. Nedro passed away many years ago, but I'm glad she made this stubborn kid do it right.

The only teacher I had who made an issue of (called at the time) penmanship was in 6th grade.. he made it part of our spelling tests. I always received a 100% grade with the spelling, but 'F' (fail) for the penmanship.

I wasn't lazy, wasn't intentionally sloppy, it didn't occur to me til much later it was probably the earliest stage of my Rheumatoid arthritis- the inability to write neatly, long before any pain or stiffness occurred.

Our daughter is left handed and I have always admired her penmanship. It is obvious that her teachers were very skilled in teaching both right and left handed student's effectively.

Maths is an ongoing skill - although not perhaps everything as it used to be. No need to learn logarithims for example. Or not for most people
