My DW and I do have differences of opinion, sometimes. I'm a de-escalator by nature.
But this morning something made me recall an incident in two friends' life.
My longtime good friend, Rick, and his wife, Robin, were living in Victoria (in western Canada, not Australia). They were passionately in love, and have a daughter. Rick's job, at a certain point in time, was not paying him a very high salary, leading at times to household tensions. Rick, like me, is usually calm, and his delivery is always reasoned. Robin is very bright, but she's by nature highly emotional.
True story. At one time Rick was out here, a long way from home, and he confides about a recent incident. He and Robin were in their kitchen, they got into a discussion about finances, Rick became defensive. Robin became so heated that she lobbed a cupful (16 ounces) or so of raw soybeans across the room at him! So then there were soybeans all over the floor in front of him. Rick wanted to quickly move elsewhere, out of the kitchen, but could barely stand up to keep walking because he had to skate on the soybeans! (He's a talented, capable guy, but a skater he ain't.)
