Today Show host 84 year old mom is missing in Arizona-'concerning circumstances'

The updates I've seen are saying it's a homicide investigation.. isn't clear why they're so sure it's a homicide.
Meds she needs to live are at the house, blood spilled at house is hers, wallet and phone left behind, cannot walk more than 50 feet, no ransom sought by kidnappers, everyone who would ordinarily be scrutinized are no longer suspects or are long shot suspects. I think she's 84 years old.

Usually investigators hold back information from the press, so maybe there are things that are important factors that we don't know.

Something is quite odd about this. She doesn’t live that far from me. A sports league friend lives a couple streets away from her. This is a very safe neighborhood. I’ve been in that area many times. People pay close to a million or more to live there. My daughter works at a nearby business and if they see a homeless person or shifty character the deputies are all over them. Unlike the nearby city across the river where there are drug zombies and criminals at almost every bus stop.

All 3 networks here interrupted mid-day programming today for over 45 minutes for an "update" on this situation. There was the sheriff, who rambled on and on, but said nothing really. Then he turned the microphone over to someone else, who then had others speak. None of the speakers had any news of substance related to the case.

Yeah, no kidding. I really do feel for this lady and hope she is found, but interrupting scheduled program to say there is no progress. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø As they say in media, "If it bleeds, it leads".

I am sure we all hope this resolves soon and she is safe.
I do feel too much time and media on this. how it must feel if you are the family of many other people who are missing.
Hopefully this brings the issue of the missing to light.

I see what you mean about saturation coverage but with shows like Dateline and 48 Hours showing true crime stories several hours a week many have become hooked to true crime. It is a high profile person which makes it even more intriguing to many.

I think this was a crime of retribution/retaliation or the crime of predator. The lack of communication is telling.
Not only that but the scene inside the home indicated a homicide investigation.
Maybe the perp(s) knew there was to be no need for communication or demands.

As far as I can tell, there was no signs of a forced entry.
So there was planning. Get inside in an orderly and quiet fashion ... disable/disconnect the doorbell camera at 1:47.
This wasn't a hasty crime of opportunity. This was planned for the middle of the night.
The camera software suggested something moving in front of it at 2:12. Unknown whether human or animal.
Ms Guthrie had no security subscription or monitored home security system. Video was not saved to the cloud.
At 2:28 her heart monitor app disconnected from her phone. Likely that is when she was removed from her home.

How could someone have gained entry without forced entry in the middle of the night?
Did she know the perp(s) and let them in?
She had arrived home about 9:48 the previous evening.
At about 9:50, her garage door opened and closed.
Did someone have a universal garage door opener, guess the code, get in and found a door unlocked from the garage?
I might imagine someone cruising a neighborhood to see which garage doors they could open with a device for hacking.
... and found one.

Unfortunately, I think we may never know what happened, unless someone makes a mistake, caught in a similar case or gets ratted out.

Apparently she didn't take home security seriously at 84, with limited mobility and living alone. Sad. Very sad.

All that said, one thing that's tripping me up is the fact that the perp(s) removed her from her home but there was apparently a homicide scene inside. Why remove her if she she was deceased? And if she was alive when she left her home, why is law enforcement treating her home as a homicide scene? So many unanswered questions.

EDIT: Well now I see a report that law enforcement handling the investigation is not saying whether there was or wasn't signs of forced entry. It's one of the details they are not commenting on at this time. And the investigative narrative seems to indicate that the opening and closing of her garage door was done by her although they didn't specifically say that. So maybe never mind. Dunno.

I don't blame the police and FBI being so evasive. You know the perpetrator is keeping his eyes on the news, and the investigative people don't want to show all of the cards in their hands. I'm very invested in following this story, but neither I nor anyone else has any reason to know every detail of the case even though it does pique our curiosity. I just hope Mrs. Guthrie is alive, but every day that goes by that she's not found seems less likely she'll be alive when and if found.

Something else very telling about this case. … the news coverage has gone silent.

I heard the kidnapper sent a note saying that she was safe, but scared.
The family won’t deal until they have confirmation that she is safe and alive.
The family wants to visually see her.

When I first heard them say Homicide, I was thinking that maybe she had pets in the home, and they had been killed.

But there has been no mention of any pets at all.

I also think something about this is not making sense or adding up.

I hate to say this and I hope it’s only his nerves, but my initial knee jerk reaction is ā€œ the sheriff did itā€, but why.

Hopefully his saying a lot of nothing behavior is either a bad case of nerves or he is being coached by his superiors to keep his mouth shut.

He was also insistent on saying the camera over the door was not smashed, rather it was removed.

Prayers to the family for her safe return, but the longer this goes, the slimmer the chances given her health issues.

EDITED TO ADD: it was announced this morning that a $50,000 reward has been offered. Money always talks so hopefully that will get them something positive.

I too read the camera had been removed, but in the same breath, it was said the camera software detected movement at 2:12. Was there more than one camera or something? Regardless, there was no provision for image or video storage and no security monitoring services. She was out there on her own and someone took advantage of that.

I don't know 'a lot' about security cameras, but isn't the main point that they're monitored and/or recorded?

The reports I've read mention "cameras" plural, both security cams and a doorbell cam. The doorbell one was disabled (I think I read that it was done while she was out that night.) Another one caught an image of someone/something before it stopped working.

Only with a paid subscription. Without a subscription, camera captures are only viewable for about 3 hours before the memory is overwritten. With a subscription, those captures are stored to the cloud or whatever storage arrangements the subscription company offers.

Yeah, I just read, "Guthrie had more than one camera around the property, officials said. The camera was previously in the ā€œfront door areaā€ of the house is the only one that is known to be missing." ... It's almost like whomever was there, knew the capabilities or rather incapabilities of her cameras.

Living in that environment alone …. I would have Motion-Sensor Flood lights OUTSIDE ... both front and rear areas, making a much more secure setting.

Anyone steps on the property, and the area is lit up! Gets attention.

I hope she is found safe.
if a ransom they should have asked for something by now unless those who took her did not know about medications and she did not make it.
my question is would another elderly person (without a famous kid) get this attention and has this attention made it worse not better to investigate?
If Joe Blows mom had disappeared, they wouldn't be getting national attention, probably just regional attention. The reason Mrs. Guthrie is, is because this is a high profile case. I hope this case and all cases has a happy ending. Unfortunately a lot of them don't.

The smashed cameras-unless she had really common camera in common locations how would they know where and how many she had?

Starting to seem like an inside job. But the little blood they found doesn't seem like it's from a catastrophic injury or vigorous argument that turned into a fight.
I wonder how old the blood on her front porch is. It'd dried up blood. Can forensics tell how old blood is? It could have been from a previous injury. Chances are she's on a blood thinner and it if she is, it takes very little to make you bleed.

There are many kinds and set ups of cameras. Some only record when movement is detected. Mine are the old fashioned hard wired kind that record every moment of every day, 24 hours a day. Every 30 days, the system over-writes the oldest date, or it would run out of storage space - but at any time, I have the last 30 days, can pick any date, and go back and review it.

I haven’t been following this case. I don’t find the mother of a celebrity anymore important than that of any one else.
There are over 2000 children that go missing each day, yet I have not seen one picture on TV or any mention on the radio regarding a missing child. It is true that many of these children do turn up rather quickly, but nonetheless, many have gone missing and still are missing. There are over 90,000 missing and active cases of missing children in the U.S.
