Nine people have been killed and 25 injured in shootings at a school and home in British Columbia in western Canada, police said. Six victims were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while a seventh person died on the way to hospital.

The suspect's body was also found at the school with a self‑inflicted injury, officials said. Two more people were found dead inside a residence nearby - police believe the shootings are connected but "are not in a position to provide that definitively".

A shooter killed at least nine people and injured dozens more at a secondary school and residence in Canada before taking their own life.
Eight people were found dead, including the attacker, inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, as well as two at a connected residence.
The shooter, believed to be a woman, appeared to have died from a self inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

The attacker has not yet been named and their motive remains unclear. They were described as a 'female in a dress with brown hair', according to an emergency alert sent to phones.

As police searched the school, they found six people shot dead. A seventh person with a gunshot wound died en route to hospital

School children barricaded their classroom doors with tables as they hid from the shooter.

A total of six victims were found inside the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School (pictured), two at a connected residence, and another died while being transported to a hospital, Royal Mountain police said

Tumbler Ridge, a picturesque mountain valley town in the foothills of the Rockies about 736 miles north of Vancouver, has a population of 2,400.

It is described as an 'incredibly safe community' by councillor Norbury.

He added: 'We don't lock our doors here. We have three police vehicles in our town, we are very small. We are a small community. We know each other, we all know the victims. They are our friends, our friends' children.'

The mayor of Tumbler Ridge, Darryl Krakowka, told CBC: 'I will know every victim. I've been here 19 years, and we're a small community. I don't call them residents. I call them family.'

The transgender gunman who murdered his mother and brother before killing six people in the second-deadliest school shooting in Canadian history has been pictured for the first time.

Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, opened fire in the library at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.

A female teacher was killed, alongside three girls and two boys aged between 13 and 17.

The shooter took his own life at the school. He killed his mother, Jennifer, and brother, Emmett, at their home beforehand, CTV News reported.

Van Rootselaar was understood to have used his mother's name, Strang, socially and at school. He was named by Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Wednesday and described as a woman.

The RCMP explained that Jesse began identifying as female six years ago, aged 12, and said there had been multiple call-outs to his home related to his mental health over the years.

Van Rootselaar, who stopped attending school four years ago at the age of 14, even had to be 'apprehended for assessment' under the country's mental health act at one point.

'Police have attended that residence in the past, approximately a couple of years ago, where firearms were seized under the Criminal Code,' said Dwayne McDonald, Deputy Commissioner of British Columbia RCMP.

'I can say that at a later point in time, the lawful owner of those firearms petitioned for those firearms to be returned, and they were.'

Jennifer did not have a valid license for firearms at the time of her death.

This is just so sad and so wrong on so many levels. :(

Any word on the little girl? I looked at the picture of her and it was heartbreaking to think what she is going through to try to survive.
I pray for her and the families of the deceased. I think the person who did this was mentally ill. To kill your mother and brother, one is usually showing signs of a mental illness.

I don’t have any other words to say.

I hate guns and the monsters who use them. But of course the NRA, gun manufacturers, and gun crazies, do not care how many innocent people are killed by them. They never have cared, and never will care.
In the same way that cigarette manufacturers promoted cigarettes as being healthy while they were killing milliions..
