An invasion of privacy

Last week the hall doors in the apartment building where I live were closed. They are not locked, just closed. No answer given except "they are broke and it will be months before they are fixed." Meanwhile it is extremely difficult for myself and others to get to the mailroom, trash room or any place else in the building. These doors are firedoors and will close automatically with there is an alarm.

Today everyone got a notice on their door that they will be coming at 1 pm on Monday to install a safety device on the inside of everyone's door.

Does anyone have any idea hat this device might be?
I know there are 2 gals here that live in apts and I am wondering if they are managed or owned by CRM management company in Rome, NY.
 
I just called for an appliciation for an apartment in Montana where I used to live. My great grands are buried there. I was told there would be an apt open in about 4 months.
 
There are some situations where they are apparently permitted to come into apartments without first getting permission, such as a flood or a fire, etc. Anything involving the safety of the building.

I've already told the story of the time I was in the shower and suddenly heard two men talking in my living room. Scared the living daylights out of me. It turned out to be the building "engineer" (who fixes everything) and his assistant, investigating a call they had gotten from another resident about thinking there was a flood. They apologized and ran out into the hall, and waited to talk with me (I got dressed in a hurry!) but I don't think they committed any crime, they were just ensuring safety.

Your building must have an office. Why don't you just go there and ask what's going on?

If you died suddenly and weren't discovered for a week or two, people would be complaining of lack of community vigilance and support - can't have both ways!!
 
They aren't coming into the apt without permission. According to the law they have to give you 24 hrs notice that they are coming and if it's stuff the landlord needs to do you really don't have an option. If it's the doors to the building and if they're putting in a security device it may be a special lock. As long as they give you proper notice Dusty they're not invading your privacy.
