How do you feel about birthdays as you get older?

My hour glass is bottom heavy enough. Another birthday, another year's accumulation. But I do like the somberness of mortality, it's a nice contrast with the easy joy and frivolity of youth. A cake with the correct number candles would be a fire hazard.

I guess I'd describe my feelings as ambivalent. Let us eat cake.
 
When I was a child, no-one celebrated my birthday... to this day the only birthday cake I've ever had was one baked for me on my 70th birthday last year by my neighbours...

...so as an adult, I feel always I want to celebrate my birthday.. however I can.. and I do.. albeit in a quiet way... no parties, but significant recognition in a small way... just a recognition that I...who was stillborn... has not only survived to this age.. but thrived...

I do like the birthday cards and wishes on my birthday. My husband and I like to celebrate in our own way with a special dinner and dessert. We do not buy presents for our birthdays just make it a nice day.

Yep we like to avoid shopping and the accumulation of 'stuff' as far as possible. But it is an excuse for some cake, sometimes a small gathering but usually just us.
 
When I was younger I had lots of friends to help me celebrate my birthday. Usually my cake was either made or bought for me.

I just had a birthday a couple of weeks ago. Now my partner / husband buys my birthday cake. He knows exactly what kind to get. There are never any candles on it. Thank heavens ! Birthdays aren’t as exciting as they used to be but they are still celebrated.

I like birthdays. Who doesn't love cake, a party and a personal holiday? (Nobody I'd hang out with, that's for sure!)

60 was the only difficult age for me to accept. For months after that birthday I'd be in a funk whenever I thought about how old I was.

The blessed gift of Medicare took any sting out of 65. To avoid 70 being a repeat of the 60 blues, I practiced by saying I was "almost 70" immediately after turning 69. When that birthday rolled around my psyche was already in 70 mode.

Plus I threw a big 70s party for DH & me because we're about 6 months apart in age. Will probably have another party at 75. YOLO

I'll practice again at 74 for 75, 79 for 80, and so forth, God willing and the creek don't rise.
 
I just recently came across a video of an old girlfriend from 1980 who was a student at the SF Institute of Culinary Arts at the time. On my birthday she came over and baked me a cake for my birthday which was amazingly good. She went on to be a chef and was featured in this episode of a local show called the Great Chefs of San Francisco:

I don't do anything special on my birthdays, nor give them much thought, except to be thankful for still having them. But there are certain people who always send a card and call when it's my birthday, and I do the same when it's theirs. I enjoy that part, since we get to catch up on each other's news.
 
Just another day for me at almost 93 and now it seems my family.
Note that governments here in Canada don't provide any special assistance.
Everything is geared to age 65, 75 in which of course we are already included

I have yet to see anything special happen for 90 plus and some of us could use it.
It's seems like we just don't exist.
