I Am a Man of Many Accounts

Well, that's sounds self aggrandizing enough to get people's attention, but what I wanted to do was rant about all the internet garbage sites that think they're so important that I must set up an account with them. Some are necessary if they are used often such as:

Walmart for ordering and curbside pickup.
Amazon for loyal customers.
Streaming services who require monthly access to your checking account.
Etc.

But one time purchases for odd items, where you are unlikely to visit ever again, but consider themselves something on the order of Marshall Fields or Sears? A couple of years ago I bought a light switch that would automatically turn the light on inside my grandfathers clock once a week when it was time to wind. It came, but then I needed an app to run it with my phone, so I downloaded that, and it was free and straight forward.

I used it for a couple of years. Then a few weeks ago the app required me to sign up for an account or it would no longer work. What does that have to do with using a thing I'd already bought? I refused, as I often times do when some piddly outfit wants me to have an account with them for some service which itself is unnecessary. I also found a more convenient substitute reminder.

Years ago I started downloading things that required accounts. I saved my user names and passwords in a special file not connected to the internet. I now have a list of passwords for services I don't use. It numbers over a hundred. That's just for things I never use anymore. And of course, they all want their password to be one of a kind, along with my address, phone number, and whatever else they think I will give them.

OK, I'm done. I feel better. Thanks.

Well, the title certainly got my attention! :) At one point, I had over 100 accounts. This thread reminds me that I have to go through again and delete from my designated document the login information for those I'm unlikely to visit again. I can understand your annoyance. Another thing...some of these sites send promotional emails, for which I wind up having to unsubscribe.

Companies profile customer spending by aggregating data from loyalty programs, credit card transactions, website cookies, and third-party data brokers to build 360-degree profiles. They monetize this information primarily through targeted advertising, personalised upselling, and selling anonymised behavioural data to third parties, turning your spending habits into significant revenue.
Cash is King because it's anonymous.

Dave, it’s time to become a man of many names. I’m just starting this. I’ll keep a diary of my new names, a throwaway email, throwaway address, and if I can a throwaway phone number. Google offers this to Americans only. I might even become a 5’10, blonde if they require that.

I have done that in the past. I don't know why I stopped doing it. It seemed like a good way to avoid being immortalized.

Try to keep in mind there's no "they". You're dealing with a code, and it doesn't think at all - not about itself, and not about you. It simply performs a task, same as your light switch.

I was an Irish Setter named Rowlf once. No one questioned it.

I'm apparently on a worse list. Today I got a scam traffic ticket warning from the "Dept. of Motor Vehicles." I'm supposed to click on their link and find out the address that I'm supposed to send my (fake) traffic fine to by tomorrow or I will lose my driving privileges.

Amazing that people still fall for this. Real traffic tickets are sent in the regular mail, not email, and they don't make ridiculous threats.

A few.

This one
Amazon
Facebook
Instagram (Though I haven't used it for years)
Netflix, Disney+, NowTv
Bluesky (after deleting X)
Several train info sites (Railcam, Railadvent etc)
FlickR (Pro account since 2008. 1.7k Followers, 9,287 photos, 12.5 Million views)
Several Photography Forums, including one I set up in 2005 and still run.

Apparently some do, or that wouldn't be a thing.

Pretty sad.

My cat has a facebook account and his own email. My home phone is also in his name.
Poor thing gets a lot of spam emails. And spam calls. I used to answer for him. Now I dont.
" Im sorry he cant talk right now. Can I take a message." ;D

I just checked and I see i have seventy sites. Most could go since they are from me signing up to check prices before I sell things.

FYI. I dont order things from random sites. I look up the item on Walmart and order from there.
The price is often the same or cheaper. Also less people to plaster my info all over the internet.

I was gifted my first computer 21yrs ago on my 50th birthday. I have numerous accounts with websites and online companies that don't even exist anymore ...because they're obsolete.

I wasnt gifted one but I paid for my first computer at fifty right after I retired for the first time.
Before that I had WebTv. I still have WebTv emails and so does the cat. Im sure I have a bunch of those websites too.
I probably could find them if I looked thru my old emails if I cared.

I only have 13. I just wondered why I had ESPN and then remembered I enter their NCAA Brackets contest every year.

Many of them don't really want me. I just got through trying to sign up for Apple TV so I could watch Pluribus and they said, 'Your account is locked." I don't remember ever joining before. For similar reasons, I never got to watch The Sopranos and that hurt.

I have an account with Amazon and Costco and belong to 2 forums. I like to keep my life simple.
What about banks, credit cards, recipe sites, newsletters, news subscriptions, medical offices, health sites, etc?

I have over 250 different accounts/log-ins (maybe 35 are for business) and 9 email accounts. Without a couple of password managers I'd never be able to keep everything straight.

I don’t do any banking on my phone . My husband takes care of all of that. If I want to look up a recipe I just do a Google search. I don’t watch the news so that’s an easy one.
Medical offices? I use the phone to make appointments. Health sites? If I have questions I ask Chat GPT or do my own Google search.
