Is anyone beginning to Prep?

with regard charging the phone... a solar charger would be your best bet for that...

if you think you can't eat cold canned food... canned ham, baked beans... soup... all would be palatable cold and wouldn't need heating...

...you bring a good point with regard your animals.. many or on special diets.. if the worst comes to the worst and tomorrow something stops food getting through to the supermarkets... eventually only basic supplies will get through..

I don't know if anyone knows this already but supermarkets used to carry supplies enough for 30 days.. now they only carry 3 days supply, so if that runs out, there would be a big delay on any more deliveries arriving.. days at the very least... so it's important thet you have at least a week if not a minimum of 2 weeks supplies at home for you and your animals..

We're the closest we've been to a world war... so I think we all need to take things a little more seriosuly than we have in the past.,,,with regard supplies... and more importantly medication...
I have bought a huge bag of rabbit food and a load of hay, but they can also eat dandelions and I'm growing them carrots.
I just saw a youtube video of a woman making burgers, putting them baked in a can with broth and 1 spoon of vinegar, closed the pot and cooked the pots in water 70 mins. Lot of work though. I think I'll just go with beans.

I will not become a prepper because I believe that what would happen is what you see in so many apocalyptic films. People would be going around in gangs taking what they want and killing anyone that got in their way, and maybe just for fun. I have always been convinced we are only one crisis away from the total loss of humanity. If you want to prep, you would have to have bunker and an extensive armory.
Yeah, that's dark, but it takes very little to set people off. That is seen almost daily in mob actions all over the world.
Lol and I was thinking: I can feed the whole flat with that absurd amount of rice I bought. I asked the neighbour if he prepped. He was like: Oh no did you fall for that nonsense? He was not prepping. He went through WWII already. So I said: I have enough for the whole flat. You can always come over for food. I might even feed the neighbours' cats cause I bought canned fish and my son says it stinks.

This always makes me wonder how long canned food actually lasts. In the shows, they scavenge food and meds 5+ years later, but in reality I don't think stuff lasts that long....

We are earthquake prepared, but if there is anything like an apocalypse - I hope I go in the blast, because I am too old to live that kind of life.

enure you have a source of flame..lighter/matches etc...
a source of clean water.. either stored water .. and or purifying tablets
Duct tape... holds everything together and patches up leaks..
Candles..
Solar chargers.. for phones or batteries and lights etc..
Solar lights...

People store canned foods galore.. but many forget about the important Can opener...
I totally agree with all that. The duct tape can be substituted with a spool of twine, but it's a perfect list, imo.

I don't have any water stored, but I have several water filters. And they're easy to make if you have access to sand and charcoal.

I used to keep several 5-gallon buckets of water on hand, but you're advised to either dump it or use it and replace it every few years, and I got tired of doing that. You're also advised to add a little bleach to it. I think it was one or two tablespoons for every 5 gallons of water. That's probly a good thing to do.

Canned food lasts for years. It's easy to tell if it's gone bad - if the can looks swollen, even slightly, or if it makes a hissing sound or the contents start bubbling out the moment you crack it open, or if what's inside looks like soup but it isn't soup, don't eat it...you've got a can of salmonella.

I agree! Canned food lasts for years. We’ve eaten stuff close to 5 years old. Stuff that’s gone bad will expose if you’re not careful but canned food that’s gone bad will look like it’s gone bad. You can tell.IMG_2617.jpegIMG_2618.jpeg

With jarred food, I think if the inner seal doesn't >pop< when you open it, you shouldn't eat it....is that right?

Beans take lots of water and lots of fuel

That’s exactly right. The jars that don’t pop we store in the fridge and eat them first. Bottles that haven’t popped properly have a different sound to them when you tap the top.
Note: We store most of our food without the rings. That way if a jar goes bad it will explode in the pantry and we will know.

When you’re finished bottling canned food, each jar wiil pop due to pressure. Canned food should pop when you open it too.

I have enough solar to subsist with zero electricity. At least 30 days of non perishable food and plenty of water stored. Firearms and plenty of ammo.

Our infrastructure is highly dependent on technology. Any type of failure or natural disaster means you're shit out of luck. We don't have real security. Our existence is a house of cards, we have completely lost our independence and self reliance:(

As a Boy Scout growing up the BS motto "Be Prepared" has always been part of my living practice. I have been keeping extra food, water and ammunition on hand for years, in case of natural disaster or political instability.

AI Overview

"Be Prepared" is the official motto of the Boy Scouts (now Scouting America), established by founder Robert Baden-Powell in 1907. It means
being in a constant state of readiness—mentally and physically—to handle emergencies, do your duty, and help others

An interesting thread with a lot of good advice and ideas most of us realy hope we dont have to put into practice for an extended period of time. That said living some distance from town and always aware that road closures due to storms, power failures killing hydo and water supply we try to be somewhat prepared .... and rural folks always support each other.
Yes, 50 gallons of water in storage good for quite a while if outhouse out back is used, good stock of dried and canned food but more that we can use in a week if power goes out in the freezers unless its winter, Wood stove with room to cook on top in living room and whole 30 acres of wood out back....even some cut n split ready to go most of the time.
Figure we could go a month, possibly more, fairly easily with no power except would be boiling water, after that would need gas to get to town to get groceries assuming that there were any to get given the 'just in time' supply chain nowadays.

Not doing anything special. Earthquake preparedness keeps us well stocked, as I've described in threads like
Do you have enough food in your house?.

This morning I ordered an extra case of dog food thanks to @Teacher Terry's comment. Between that and his dry food, Ozzy-dog would be set for at least a couple of months.

We have 90 gallons of fresh water on hand plus a backyard swimming pool, a very deep canned & dry foods pantry, full freezers with food that will last longer than a couple of days because they're heavily stocked with fruits, veggies and starches. All told, I might have a pound of frozen meat (that I've been gradually cooking and feeding to Ozzy) and a couple of pounds of shrimp.

Our RV's fridge can run on propane. The tanks are full, so anything needing refrigeration could be shuffled into that fridge/freezer.

The above said, if all hell breaks loose, having enough food and water will likely be the least of my concerns.

I appreciate your thoughts, but no. Remember Y2K? (When we changed centuries). Did that then. I've worried too much about everything as it is and my health won't take any more overload.

I liked this line from post #2: "If you want to prep, you would have to have bunker and an extensive armory."

Whatever will be will be. If that's the wrong attitude, so be it.
I'm like you. Whatever might happen is beyond my control. I'm 72yo. I've had a good life for the most part. If it's my time to go, so be it. We're all going to go sometime. I'm not in a hurry, but if it happens, I just hope it happens fast.
