This should scare the hell out of anybody thinking of flying

I flew all during the eighties, nineties and into 2000 at least twice a month. I flew all around the US and never had a problem with any aspect of it. I love flying and while lately it has become more difficult, I'd still rather go out in a plane crash than in the medical system in place today for older folks.

I live in a small city, I believe less than 100,000. Yet our traffic and driving has gotten horrendous. I go for errands in a one mile radius and by the time I get home I feel as if I've dodged death barely at least three times.

I consider flying a necessary evil. I've flown many, many times but it has been some years now. I do tend to believe it's safer than being on the road BUT it's uncomfortable, a long day, and a PIA.

I've always heard that flying is safer than being on the road and I tend to believe it.

I do agree however that we have less and less training and work ethics in all areas. But I also agree that we have LESS major airplane crashes nowadays due to a lot of backup things.

Overall I think to myself when it's my time, it is my time. To go I mean. I'm not going to avoid something that people do every day and if I need to do it.

Does that mean I'd jump off a bridge or cliff? Of course not. I don't court danger but things we all do or may need to do, I don't sweat them.

I more hate the day lost traveling and being packed in like a sardine than I sweat that we may crash and die.

Those pilots know they die too if they crash by the way... So they have an incentive to stay safe.

For decades on decades there have been crashes and even deaths occasionally. How many fatal car crashes are there a day?

That doesn't mean I disagree with the fact they need to get more ATC working and incentives for more to train for it.

I hate flying due to the noise and discomfort, plus, I feel like a sardine crammed into a can with dozens of other sardines. I wish we had high-speed rail here.
we have high speed rail here but it's really expensive ..it;s cheaper for me to fly from here to Scotland... only 500 miles that it is for me to get a train.... however I enjoy the train even if it takes 7 hours rather than just an hour by plane

OldMan, the last fatal plane crash was not in 2009 but it was in 2025 when the Blackhawk helicopter ran into a passenger jet that was originally from Wichita and the crash occurred in the Washington DC area I believe. I think the plane was coming in for a landing.

The closest I ever got to flying was going up the side of a mountain in a gondola. Even then I didn't like it.
Lol I'd fly any day over going up in what I call a cable car or whatever or a ski lift as well. I hate those things. Too slow, too much obvious knowledge that you are suspended in air and slowly and looking way down and having a total view of such... I hate ferris wheels too, they just rock and dangle... Fast upside down rides twisting, fast rides, fully enclosed, I will take any day over a dangling swinging slower high ride.

To me there is nothing enjoyable about flying. First time of course you hope I think for a window seat so you can see the world from above. Ha ha. Sure on takeoff and maybe on landing or as you are lower... You find out pretty quickly in economy class for sure, window seat means you are in the farthest seat from the aisle and have to barely squeeze by and bother people when you need the bathroom, etc. My choice is aisle seat ever since my first flight if one gets a choice.

I don't like heights when exposed I guess... Or slow... But when so high and fast you basically can't see anything and are enclosed, that doesn't really bother me...

It's just a PIA. Tighter than a sardine in a can in economy for sure. And a very long day. But if one could only drive, one would never see some of the places one gets to see if they fly. Too far away. Not drivable, etc.

Out of many flights in my life, I'm sure many have had more, but I had one trip if not two a year for some years, not for awhile now though, I only had nasty turbulence once. I had delays though and one time we had to dump fuel in the air and turn around for a medical emergency on the plane and then sat on the tarmac for hours roasting to death.

My first flight ever when I WAS worried about flying as I never had flown the flight was delayed I think by something like 12 hours... We were told different stories about why... The first was a mechanical issue... Well like THAT didn't worry me never having flown before...

Anyhow, I just don't sweat it for years on end now though. I feel as if I am taking my life in my hands every time I get on the road around here more so.

Sorry, I can't sleep lately. So I'm rambling a bit in the dark of wee hours.
