I guess Rakaia left

After he said goodbye, then announced he wasn't leaving I tried to PM him and he is no longer in the forum. I know his thread got a little out of hand, but that's sad. I always appreciated his input.

If you are still lurking, Rakaia, try 'www.debatepolitics.com'. That's my go-to political forum.
Oh that's a shame, it's sad when we lose interesting members...

Thank you for the debate link. However, I went there, read a few threads, and it seemed to be just name calling. No thanks.

In Rakaia's profile he described himself as male, plus in the thread below he said he was married to a Canadienne.
This is my introduction to the forum.

As for him leaving? 🤷‍♀️ No biggie. Some of his posts were interesting but the forum will carry on with no discernible interruption. This hardly approaches the scale of our loss of much beloved Gary O to macular degeneration and RadishRose to death. ❤️

The need for dramatic flounce outs strike me as curious - I've seen more than a few over the years.

Hmmm...

Then there are the ones who flounce out in such a dramatic and 'final' way, yet remain here using their long established other accounts, are fascinating.

Then we have to pretend that we don't know who they are.

His introduction was from 3 years ago. Shrug! 🤷‍♀️ I thought he was new here.

How is that even a thing? I wouldn't think a person could have more than one account. Different IP's? TOR? Seems like a lot of effort for what? Especially if it's, as it apparently is, obvious to other members (I confess to having no clue). Silly though, to march out and reappear wearing a trench coat and mustache classes.

I didn't have a lot of interaction with Rakaia and consequently felt generally neutral about his presence. But if he wanted to leave (which it's obvi he did), then he did what was right for him and I wish him the best in future.

Resuming regularly scheduled programming.

I don’t think it’s usually anything technical like different IPs or TOR. Most forums don’t make it that hard to create another account if someone really wants to.

And it’s not so much “obvious” in a forensic sense -- more that over time you start to recognise patterns in how people write, what they focus on, little turns of phrase, that sort of thing. The patterns start to add up.

I agree it’s a lot of effort for what it is, which is partly why it’s a bit curious when it happens.

I’m not saying that any of this is correct in this case. But if someone wants to leave, fair enough. My comment was more about the odd theatre of leaving and quietly not leaving at the same time.

Not something I take too seriously, most of the time, just one of those forum quirks. Though I’ve seen the odd case where it felt a bit more intentional, sometimes even spilling into PMs, which is a bit different.

Huh, well, whatever works for each one, I guess. Honestly, it seems a bit silly to me, but if a person wants to leave and come back (or not really leave, as you've mentioned), wearing a not-so-great disguise. I mean... okay. 🤷‍♀️

My thoughts on this... the member admitted his contempt (his word, not mine) for the USA. Now... I'm thinking that if I would have "contempt" for Russia as an example, there'd be only one reason to join a forum that was based in Russia and had many Russian members. I wouldn't do that because I'm not a pot stirrer... but that's all that makes sense.

If I am going to leave some where, I would just leave.
There would be no discussion about it.
I would just be ---> gone <--- .
I've made many friends on SF over the past 8-1/2. I'd worry if they disappeared without a word and am pretty sure they'd feel the same about me.

If I decided it was time for me to go, I'd do so without a flounce-out. Perhaps a post explaining I was dealing with vision or health challenges, or felt the forum was no longer a good place for me to be. I'd express appreciation for the many fine folks I'd met and spent time with here. That kind of thing.

Should something happen to me suddenly, whether banned (perish the thought), death or extreme medical condition (ditto to perishing the thought), some close forum friends have my email address and/or cell number.

If I couldn't do so, eventually my family would stumble over a personal text or email and would surely reply to explain my absence.

Rakaia's profile is still here and it shows that he was last online earlier today. Maybe he is just taking a break from posting.
