Can't get a new prescription unless I have an office call

I noticed on Friday that I am getting low on my BP meds. I called the pharmacy since the bottle indicated I was eligible for one more refill. The pharmacy said I am not - that prescription expired on April 28th. Called the cardiologist's office and they said they can't issue a new scrip unless I see the doctor and he doesn't have any open appointments until November. What would you do?

Does that office have an N.P. or P.A., who could see you for a brief update check, soon?

Tell your pharmacist that you can’t get an appointment and that you’d like to get a refill on your meds. They will call your doctor and speak on your behalf. At least that’s what they do here in Canada.
I believe they did that before, but that option wasn't offered on Friday. All I can do is try again on Monday. Why do these things always happen on the weekend.

Maybe on Monday, you’ll be able to speak to a different receptionist. If she says no, do what my friend did in a similar situation. She said ā€œif I don’t get the medication, I won’t be alive for another appointment.ā€

If push comes to shove and you still get a no, suggest that you’ll have to file an official complaint. Haven’t a clue if there’s actually a place to do that, but bet that it would work.

if I increase or decrease my BP medication, I generally would not see immediate results since it can have accumulative and decumulative effects, meaning I would not see a significant change within hours or a couple of days. You will likely be okay over the weekend, as long as you can get this resolved by Monday, unless you are taking a medication such as Clonidine, which can produce dramatic BP changes within hours.

I don't quite understand what is happening here. My cardio wants me in every six months. Having to see your doc before renewing your script implies you haven't been in to see him/her in quite a while.
It's been over a year. I get a scrip for 90 tabs with 3 refills. This one just expired, so the pharmacy won't fill it. Missed the expiration by 2 days.

I can understand why the doctor wants t o see you then. Unfortunate that you just missed the expiry date - but the doctor shouldn't just be doing prescriptions for over a year without checking you in person.

This is getting ridiculous. I called the doctor's office and explained again what was happening. The person said she'd "Look into it." That was 4 hours ago. I called the pharmacy to see if the scrips were ready and a recorded massage said that they were "under review."

Being Monday, the doctor's office may be busier than other days. "Under review" - stated in the pharmacy message - seems to indicate they're working on it, but it's still pending approval. Might be best to give it more time, but call the doctor's back in a couple of hours, or well before closing time. Surely they will prescribe enough to last until you can get in to see the doctor.

It sounds like they are working on it. Just keep pestering them till you get the response you want.
