These men are so very nice and friendly. I tell them how much I appreciate what they do; it's so important!
I agree! I wish I had a way to thank the wonderful people who plow and sand our roads. So many times over the years I have rolled over in bed, warm and cozy at 2:00 am, while the winds howl outside and the temperatures plummet to 20 or 30 below 0, hearing the plows outside as they clear and sand the roads to keep us safe. I keep meaning to track down a way to extend my thanks.

I think thanks are so important. Just last week I sent a letter to my son's former band director, who once helped him tie his necktie before a band concert, back when he was about 12 or 13. I'd pulled up a YouTube video, but we had no luck, and it was too late to contact one of his friends' fathers, so I brought him to the concert early and told him to ask this band director if he could help. And he did. I've never forgotten that small kindness.

$35 USD (26 pounds?) per month is the normal charge for weekly pickup of the usual 55 gallon cans. My can is 35 gallons, much easier for me to handle.

Comparatively to the UK, is that a lot??

Edited to add: It is a private company, not municipally owned.
Mine is included in my council tax which covers all sorts of things like ..

  • Waste & Environment: Rubbish and recycling collection, street cleaning, and maintaining parks and open spaces.
  • Roads & Transport: Road and pavement maintenance, fixing potholes, street lighting, and concessionary bus passes.
  • Emergency Services: Funding for your local police and fire and rescue services.
  • Community Amenities: Libraries, leisure centers, museums, and local event spaces.
  • Public Services: Planning and building control, trading standards, environmental health, and birth/death/marriage registrations.
We pay monthly and council tax is what we used to call rates... the tax is based on the value of our properties.. band A being a typical small property... right up to band H...

My property is band D.. and I pay £150 approx... monthly... for all of the above. We have 5 bins in total for recycling seperation in each house, ( not apartments they have communal bins) each bin is 53 gallons ( 240 litres) where I live here in the expensive south . and the cost to empty those is included in my council tax. The only exception is my garden waste wheelie bin.. which is only grass and twigs.. and we pay £60 per year to have that emptied. We don't pay extra to have waste taken away unless it's large items like furniture..

It's close to 9.30pm and it's almost dark.... still warm..

I did all the laundry today and got that dried and hung up again.. and I washed 2 pairs of trainers as well..one pair is going to be donated to the charity shop...

I've just had late dinner...Popcorn Scampi..with a home made Marie Rose sauce..(y)

I picked up 30 Farxiga tablets at the pharmacy today for $181.45 with insurance. I had checked out a promotion for TrumpRX which quoted $35. for the same med. I called and after an hour and 15 minutes on hold they dropped me. Have you had any luck with this?

I spent this morning trying to figure out a reason to keep going. Then I had a nice nap and when I woke up, I still had no good reason, other than to take the dog to the park. I guess that's something.

I got a little book called KEEP GOING by Austin Kleon from Abebooks for less than $5. Not sure it has any answers but I know I am not alone. For me feeding cats does something similar to walking dogs.

We had a meeting with our legal eagles, at their office, regarding the bungalow we want to purchase. It might have been the collar and tie, or maybe it was the hat, there again it was probably my impeccably dressed lady, but we had so many kind comments, quite made my day.

For the first time in my life someone else besides my mother husband or son did my laundry. I put it back in my drawers afterwards and just that exhausted me.

Wound nurse came over to change the dressing. Ive been wearing this for 7months now. Lately it’s been feeling very constricted and it feels so tight but must be maintained as they don’t want lymphadema (sp?) to happen. My desire is to rip off the bandages but they must stay on. Next appointment July.

Occupational Therapist also came. Had a good workout but too short. Only half hour.

Only twenty pages left of Homecoming by Kate Morton for my first appearance in seven months at my Library Book Club this Friday. Looking forward to this. It starts at three but I am leaving at 2 and will hang out for the hour. Doing that is better mentally.

Most of what you list is supported by our property taxes which are determined by a percentage of an assessed valuation by the county. It varies greatly place to place. Usually, the majority of a tax on property goes to the local school system. My property tax for 2025 was $1030 USD based on an assessed value of $325,000. This same house in a city in Texas, however, would be taxed around $4,000/year. Texas has no state income tax. The state where I reside (Colorado) does but the income tax for me is much lower in this rural community than the property taxes in Texas, one of the major reasons why I moved here.
