I haven't read the details...nothing is going to stop it. If Sandy Hook didn't change anything, nothing is going to change. I'm just disgusted, sadly disgusted.

Years ago, a majority of American adults possessed a firearm. Rarely, one of them "snapped", went over the edge, "around the bend".

Today, a majority of American adults possess a firearms. Often, one of them "snaps".

What cultural mores have changed in America to bring this about? Certainly, no singular reason can be cited. Many can be surmised, though. In recent decades, I've read many accounts by educators suggesting the need for a turn-around in average American personal values, a "cleansing" if you will.

Actually it seems it was a hoax. People are on such high alert about stuff now it's not surprising. A week or so ago somebody called in a bomb threat to one of the local schools. Back in the day they might have traced the call, been a bit concerned but probably not a big deal. This threat closed like five schools. Poor kids, normally you welcome an excuse to get out of class. They immediately emptied the schools on one of the coldest days. No coats or hats just leave the building now. First responders had some blankets but not enough to go around. It was a hoax.

I haven`t heard any of what happened in San Diego today but I just saw a friend on Facebook say that it was a man from the town next to us who had called the cops last week and said that there were 12 "assassins" outside his house and he had shot at least one dead. This caused a huge police response-he lived way up in the mountains in a very isolated area- they even called in outside agencies from surrounding counties and helicopters, air ambulances etc. They arrived there only to find it was a man with PTSD from his military service. I`m thinking maybe they sent him to San Diego for treatment? Off to see if I can find any info on this...

Seems to me that a lot of people nowdays feel that they are entitled to have exactly what they want, and when they want it, and if they don't get it they are entitled to "get even." NO concern for the value of a human life, or acceptance of the fact that sometimes things don't go exactly your way. Like in the story that opened another thread on here -- you shoot somebody over a lousy $25 fee?? Or people who shoot someone because they perceive themselves to have been dissed? So you've been dissed -- that equals it being OK to kill the "disser?"

When I was still working, we were working on an appeal (we had a contract with the state) for a guy who had shot several people at a party. His stated reason? They were lookin' at my girlfriend funny.

Something spooky and related...when the taxes went up sharply in our area...the town hall installed bullet proof glass, counter to ceiling in the tax collectors office. There was a shooting a few blocks from here. A store rumored to have some shady side business. But as a result all the surrounding stores now are locked and you have to be buzzed in...same thing with the schools. You have to be buzzed in, be checked in by security, then escorted to the office. What's happened to the world ya know?

You live in a tough area, Fur. Unfortunately there seem to be more of them springing up around the country.

There were a lot of places like that in NYC, even back in the day, but then ... NYC.
