Okay kids, group think...What can I be when I grow up? So many applications and...
Over-qualified
Under-qualified
Too old
Too Young...I'm serious, some of the seniors job resources are 55 plus. That it would hurt them to make it 50?
Vast retail experience-which gets me stuck in frickin' retail.
Bad credit, FCRA is looking out for us as thieves, not people all too happy to fix our credit with enough money to eat.
Willing to work any job, but it's easier to hire children for minimum wage.
I'm interested in a non-profit but I can't volunteer, I need a paid position like last month.
Full time would be perfect, close to full time good, I can't even dream of benefits.
I minored in social work, have a special needs kid, THAT is a population I would do terrific with.
So okay somebody tell me a website, what to search under, it's been four months and this sucks big time. I am willing and more than able to work n' they just keep shutting the door on me...any suggestions welcome!
 

I think I may have mentioned this before somewhere, but many of those are the same reasons I became self-employed. Can you turn it all around so that your liabilities become benefits?
 
Really I have tried to think that through. But what? I could do casework...and flame out. In an urban area there are so many, you can only help so much. But yes I would do it. But my major wasn't social work and I don't have experience "in a clinical setting"...WAHWAHWAHHHH...talking more than one assorted kid from offing themselves, helping seniors with dementia be less afraid of things. But I don't have references from clinical settings, I have 'effing life experience. Somewhere that might give you credit for that?
 

Look into Developmental Disabilities Services in your area - particularly residential services; group homes for mentally delayed adults or children. They train entry-level workers and last time I checked no previous experience was required. The pay starts a little above minimum, but (last I checked) you're eligible for a raise and full benefits after a 6 month probation period. The job is interesting and very rewarding, and, as these homes are state funded, the benefits are great.
 
Fur, my niece is traveling this week but has promised to email me with specifics about work-from-home jobs and about the company she works for. She's in management with WorkingSolutions.com. I looked at their website, but it sounds so vague to me that I can't really tell what it is that they do. You might want to wander over there and have a peek.
 
Here's a crazy thought... but I'll bet you could make some decent money... especially in nicer neighborhoods.. I saw a truck in a parking lot the other day and the name on the door was "Poopers"... basically, what they did was pick up doggie poop from the owners back yards and take it away... Not a glamorous thing for sure, but they make their own hours and obviously there is little to no overhead.. Pooper scoopers.. rubber gloves... plastic bags... a little advertising with perhaps some flyers.. what else would you need?
 
I am a substitute school bus driver attendant (but they often have full time positions open), meaning I ride on special needs school buses and help the kids with disabilities board and get off of the school bus. I also monitor them during transport. It pays well and you only work two and a half hours in the morning and two and a half hours in the afternoon. You could do this and also find another part time job. Check with your local school board for any openings.
 
Thank you for the feedback everybody. I've got a list to check out of the work from home places. The disability services sounds like a good direction to research. I know they have a bunch of group homes around here. Of course I've considered working with creatures but except for groomer or the humane society...no, I couldn't handle weekly euthanasia days...there's not a lot.

It's also a question of I don't know how much longer hubby will be able to work. So this isn't just I need a job for small change. Eventually I'm going to be supporting four people on my own. My son can help out but he's not making much either. Interesting, on the way home I saw a truck "Mobile Dog Spa"...something else to look up.
 
Just wondering, Fur, have you gone to a temp agency. They might have something short term, or longer term (over 6 months) and it can always develop into something longer, like a permanent position. Here they supply the public service (government positions).
 
Problem with a mobile dog spa is that first you have to learn how to groom dogs... and THEN you would need to buy a truck with all the outfittings to do baths and grooming.. way too much start up capital IMO..
 
Yeah, I mean maybe working with someone who's already set up. My pups are wash and wear, I don't know zoo about styling.
 
Another suggestion Fur, now is a good time to take some training, like in a community college, find something you are interested in and take the program, or, maybe continuing education offers all kinds of learning opportunities.
 
Here's a thought FUR... You are fairly young... and healthy? You like helping people.. How about taking the 13 week CNA course and work in a hospital or nursing home.. giving baths.. changing beds.... helping feed patients. Pay is fairly good.. particularly in a hospital... most community colleges offer this training.
 
What's unfortunate is that most times.. people need to support themselves NOW... not in the 2 or 4 years it may take to get training for a living wage job..
 
The problem with many domestic economies now is the wild card of globalization. Local policy and funding does do much if the demand isn't there, especially when the job seeker is certified and ready to work. Recently trained graduate waving a sign over here ready to work won't mean a thing if no one will hire them.

There are a slew of jobs available --- available -- that pay as you train, and that offer mere months of training. I got a phlebotomy license within 5 months, and worked for pay at a family clinic during that time.

My son was trained as a metals worker in the Navy Reserves (not suitable for Fur, of course) and was paid. After one year of training, he joined the iron workers union, which got him jobs and further training (while still in the reserves). He now earns $38-$45 per hour, depending on whether it's a construction job or engineering job.

There are millions of jobs available through apprenticeship programs that no one is applying for.

Oh the Village People were frickin' AWESOME! " Young mahn are you listenin' to me, Young mahn there's a place you can be...". I still find it funny as heck. At a sports gathering of white trash homophobes and everyone still gets down to "YMCA".
