Kitty Play Pen is a Success

I wrote a little while ago about finding the perfect playpen for the cats. Big enough for them to roll and secure enough the dogs can't steal toys. I keep toys in a zip lock bag of catnip and rotate them so they stay way nippy. a few minutes ago I walked by and there was Ninja laying in the bottom. They take turns, he was covered in catnip and almost cross-eyed. First thought...Jeff Spicoli...

Yeah there's a kids consignment shop around the way. I haven't shopped there in so long I forgot about it. Extra large, almost new play yard for $20...can't go wrong with that.

Oh for pity's sake animals aren't children, how sad!

You're right, they aren't children but they stand in for our children and sometimes for friends for lots of people. Just because we're older and our kids are gone from the house doesn't mean that our need to bestow affection on 'someone' ceases to exist.

Sometimes I wonder about my affection for my cat...I mean, he can be a pest or aloof and uninterested when I want to cuddle him, but you know, in those moments when he's relaxed in my arms and is purring like a little motor car then I marvel and am inspired yet again to be gentle and kind to him always because he trusts me. I've earned his trust and that's a gift. And when you think of how our dogs love us with all of their hearts, how can one not respond to that emotion coming from another little fur being?

It's not sad at all that we lavish affection on our pets. What's actually sad is that so many don't get any affection.

I think if you had read Fur`s original post you would have seen that she was wanting a playpen for her cats so the dogs wouldn`t take all the cats toys and destroy them.It wasn`t that she was trying to treat the cats like children-it was just a practical thing.

It kind of reminds me of the book "Bossy Pants" by Tina Fey. It's really a fun enjoyable read...but then midway she reveals that she hates companion animals. Just kind of left a bad taste in my mouth there. I don't think I can understand that mindset. Maybe if someone had a traumatic encounter with an animal or severe allergies then maybe yeah.

But of course their our children. Superior to human kids in some ways. When a cat chooses to love you that's special. Some cats like our Ninja are cranky. He'll be petted when he chooses. So when he decides you have the perfect lap to curl in that's a compliment. The right dog and they know you walk on water, who could ask for more?

An update, there is a clothesline over the playpen. I rigged a catnip scented Care Bear so they can leap and stalk. Purrfect kitty playground.
