Decadence

I feel like a great deal of social decline in our country is due to the admiration and approval stamp given to decadence and indulgence by so many in our society. A few years ago I was watching a tv show with Paris Hilton in it because I had lost my remote and she and a friend of hers were eating ice cream that cost about $1000.00. A small dish of ice cream with some kind of gold on it. She remarked that she didn't enjoy the ice cream very much and should have bought a purse instead of eating the ice cream. I remember thinking that money could have paid the rent for a needy family.
It seems to be that so many young watch these examples of decadence and think it's fabulous. Really that kind of thing disgusts me. I wonder how why and when showing off and waste has become so appealing? Or was showing off always around & I was just less unaware of it in my youth?

It comes and goes.

Remember grunge?

I wasn't around but we all know everyone went bananas in the twenties, after WWI. Especially those crazy women. But they got to vote before WWII. So maybe decades like that (and like this) lead to something good in the grand scheme.

The ancient Romans and Greeks often indulged in decadence - it's been around among the rich forever.

It must be something natural to humans who have a surplus -- all the wasted food and clothing and things thrown away and buying new after getting tired of them. We are all decadent in some way in this society.

The ancient elite Romans would feast and feast until they had to throw up and then they'd continue feasting.....just to show that they could. "Conspicuous consumption" to show how much better off they were than the commoners. Looks like we haven't learned our lessons.

Yep.

That reminds me - I saw a guy in McDonad's the other day ... :cower:

For every Paris Hilton there is also a Bill and Melinda Gates who are wonderful philanthropists. Checks and Balances.

Yeah, but life gets even. That white lead they spread on their faces was the "in" thing. Maybe that's why so many of them were mental casesl, not to mention that it was slowly killing them.

Decadence is a pint of Ben and Jerry's in a piping hot tub, lavender bubbles...who wants to join me for every lovely drop? Or Callie is taking it AWAY.

I recline most of the afternoon and enjoy as much decadence as my body can cope with while wondering how you guys are doing...
