I live in Australia, but born & bread in Croatia. In my kids days we were poor, There was a craft shop in the town, but most of the "projects" were made from recycled materials, and lots of imagination.
A kite, valve radio, scutter..you name it we made it.
There was no computors, no iPods and so on,
The skils, I've learned then, I still used often, when I was contracting. I still use a lot of imagination, in my DYO jobs at annd around the home, often fabricating tools and jigs .required.
Not that todays kids are not smart, but try to ask them to change a handle on a hamer or axe, change the tap washer, or
change a tyre, no luck!
