Blocking threads

I'm probably not the only one finding that some topics, long standing and recent, are getting a little heavy and controversial, so I've taken advantage of the facility to block these threads from appearing.
I have to say, the forum looks a whole lot friendlier now.

If that's what makes you feel happy, then that's definitely the way to go. Personally, I don't like to block anything or anyone. We all have 'moments' where we get a little tense or cranky, but being many faceted beings, we also have moments that are uplifting and enlightening to ourselves and to others. Not only that, but I think that aside from outright abuse and name calling, we can learn from others even with topics that push our buttons and our boundaries. And I think that's important because that's how we learn to get along even when things aren't going 'my' way:).

Some here might think that on some topics, I'm totally pushy, but seriously folks, you should have seen me ten years ago when Rage was my middle name. I've learned an awful lot since then and 'several things' I've learned is how to relax, listen to others, present my case and not be a b**** about it:playful:.

I enjoy threads where there is debate and differing opinions.. IMO nothing wrong with a little controversy. I don't like the "game" section.. so I just never go to that section..

I don't care about the opinions or posters. If it looks like bait and then don't bite if you are not hungry or you feel it's a "trap". I do think some threads go round and round ie no where after a certain point but if I don't like driving in circles I don't get on that road.

Agreed. Then maybe it's just me. I find that I can get very easily depressed by a negative atmosphere.

Simply because someone else might feel the need, but not know that it's possible to do such a thing.

Just by blocking two threads which quite frankly were getting extremely annoying. The whole thing looks so much neater and simpler to negotiate around.

Sometimes I find it mildly amusing when a thread spirals out of control. I'll keep reading even if I don't respond and try to guess how long before it's locked. Then again some threads are like a roller coaster...looks like it will fly off the tracks, but eventually everyone makes nice again.

What I don't understand is the need to publicly announce things like this. If I wanted to block someone or some section, I'd just do it.
I agree.

A couple of times I have blocked myself in atonement for forgetting my manners. I have banned myself from posting for two weeks to teach myself a lesson. It was a hard punishment and I try to control myself now.

People are all individuals... People enjoy different things and have different preferences.. That includes what they expect to get out of participation in an internet forum. We can all have our opinions and we can all get enjoyment from this forum unless someone.. or a group of someones take it upon themselves to decide what is and what is not acceptable... what THEY think should be posted about and discussed... and what shouldn't .. That my dear is censorship.... if no rules are being broken and if the moderators feel that none have... STOP reading the threads that upset you... it's really very simple... seriously.

Yeah! Yeah! Yah di yah di yah! I wish I had kept my mouth shut now! At least from the number of 'notifications' I've received. It's obvious some folk agree with me! Now can we get on with the more important things like eating Yak yoghurt and dissing Yolanda?

Don't go away. Why don't you try a few of the non controversial threads I have started recently.
They aren't getting much traffic and I would welcome your input.

When black holes collide

Back to the future - double decker buses

Politeness never hurts

Vivid Festival Sydney

Or you could start a few yourself but remember that it is the more controversial topics that attract the most responses.

Absolutely! The double decker bus thread is very close to my heart and I have indeed contributed.

The problem is rarely the threads, but the inability of some to accept and respect opinions differing from their own. Forums are most widely successful when having diversity in topics and membership. To openly discuss topics which effect us , our country, and the surrounding world is good, but one needs self discipline so as to control how they respond; lacking this makes for rules restricting what/ how one may post, in essence; censorship. It takes a strong and confident individual to participate respectfully in such discussions, no need to agree, but should respect the validity of the opinions of others..... ie.....I am not into organized religion, but I respect and gladly defend the rights of others to pursue their lives as befits their philosophical beliefs, even at the forfeiture of my life; but that's me.
