Aging

Women are judged more harshly as they age. Grey hair - bad, wrinkles - bad, gain weight - bad.

Men get grey hair - they are distinguished, wrinkles - no big deal, gain weight - no big deal.

As for me - I've let my hair go grey, not fond of the wrinkles but not going to lose sleep over it. Keep weight pretty much in check - never been obese.

As far as looks, I agree it depends on the individual. Hair can be dyed, weight can be controlled, wrinkles lifted.

A lot of people still do not think bald is attractive. Men don't get as many face lifts as women do. I've seen more couples close in age when the male looked older; fat, bald and wrinkled and the female looked younger, than the other way around.

Without outside help, left to their natural states, it's a draw -unless one has the genes and/or one of them is overweight as that adds years to a person's appearance.

I think it's become a stereotype that women don't age as well as men. Just because an old geezer ends up with a babe doesn't prove that...there are often factors that were considered.

As far as demeanor-I've worked with AARP members for over 20 years and it's been my experience that a lot more men than women become nasty, cranky, impatient, demanding and sour when they get older. A lot more by far!

Here is what aging gracefully looks like. My mother is second from right, and is 93. She is with her surviving siblings. Uncle Don is 76, Aunt Thelma is 82 (??), my mother, and Uncle Ron is 80. I sure hope I got those genes.

I really think it depends on the individual & their genes.

Some of it depends on genes, but most certainly not all. It depends on how you take care of yourself. In a photo of my grandmother holding me as a newborn she looks really OLD, but a bit of math shows she was only 57. At 64 I don't look anywhere near as old as she looked in that photo.

For those unfamiliar with the "purple dress" approach

The only way to grow old!

Believe it or not there is a "Red Hat Club"

I believe the American branch is even bigger!

I've heard the purple poem before and about the Red Hat club. I'm in my own club. I'm in the Bikinis for OAPs club. I don't have 6 pack abs, nor do I want them, but I wear bikinis and the hell with anyone who doesn't like it. :D

You go, Annie! That's the attitude I like. I'm a child of the '60s and I'm going to wear my Levis and black v-neck t-shirts till the day I die. On the rare occasion I'm in a mall, the clothes I see marketed for older women are not anything I can imagine wearing. That's just how I choose to express my sensibilities about clothes and image. Your mileage may vary.

Yep! I've made the point with younger people that one advantage of being old is you don't have to be cool any more. You can wear what you want and the hell with fashion. Most liked the idea of that freedom.
I've got a box of stuff to bring to Thailand for this winter and I keep adding to (can't pack too early!). 3 bikinis, a pair of short shorts, tank tops, etc are already there.

I actually felt FREE as I aged. I am happier now than I was when I was young and pretty. I love this stage in my life & really could give a flip about what someone else thinks I look like. :)
