How to Get Rid of Flies

I guess the weather being so mild certain pests are still making us wacky. There are a bunch of flies in the dining room. Try as I might I can't swat them all. The only open food bowl is the cat dish. How do I get rid of these little monsters?

I just use the fly swatter and take them down one by one, haven't seen one for quite awhile in my neck o' the woods. Like many bugs, they will gravitate toward the windows, I usually get them there.

Late this season, we were inundated with house flies. My wife read somewhere that PineSol would make them go away. She put a couple small saucers out with PineSol and it did seem to work. Guess they don't like the smell. Might give it a try. If nothing else, the pine scent is refreshing.

We, too, have been seeing a bunch of flies and ladybugs with this mild Fall weather. Like SeaBreeze says, they seem to migrate to the windows...so, I keep a small handheld vacuum cleaner handy, and just go around the windows and suck them up. We should be getting our first hard freeze this coming week, so that should take care of most of them.

Interesting, but you have to be able to hit the thing. Not sure if I am that good a shot.

This time of year they are probably cluster flies which appear, and can disappear, quite quickly.

They are unpleasant, but not as disgusting as the normal disease ridden house fly.

For small infestations the best thing is a vacuum cleaner.

Have you ever noticed that it seems like when you kill one fly 50 more come to the funeral ? :)

Get a couple of those sticky strips that hang from the ceiling, I've used them in the garage and they work great.

I keep up my practice of learning to live with all God's creatures, so I try to shower on a regular basis.

Failing that, I pick off the suckers one by one with rubber bands. :p

Sophie for all her bluster really enjoys eating them. But the vacuum sounds like a good idea. Once a month I go to the basement and suck spiders...weirdly satisfying.

Rubber bands sounds much more fun and skillful than swatting with unopened AARP mailers.

True, but it will never surpass the thrill of nailing a spider on the wall from 15 feet away with a shuriken (Ninja throwing star).

That was pure luck, that was. But my son saw it and reacted like you'd expect a 7-year-old to. I was SuperDad for a few days.

The other day my son ordered an electric bug zapper from Amazon. Thirty bucks and it blasts them like popcorn. Really it had gotten to a cup of coffee left on the counter would have swimmers within minutes. Rather satisfying hearing the nasty things fry.

Gross! We have screened in windows and doors and avoid letting them in. If one or two do sneak through, I get a rag and spin it around over my head, up near where they are and direct them to the open doorway where they flee. It takes a few minutes but this technique works, less icky than killing them, eww.

Bug zappers do work...on some species. However, You might reconsider using one of these indoors. When you"Zap" a bug, you spray a fine mist of bug parts and bacteria all over the area. Using one of these indoors exposes you to the potential of various health issues. Read this report...paying close attention to the 5th paragraph.

There are all kinds of lures and traps, etc, that you can pick up real cheap at places like Walmart.

I've used fly strips or ribbons before that worked pretty well.

They're just a plastic strip coated with a really sticky substance that attracts the flies. When they land on it, they're stuck and can't get off.

Similar to fly paper which I assume is still available, too.

It was cute though. When they were still dominating the house, especially windows...My daughter brought the Bearded Dragon along to wake me in the morning. If you saw this mini dinosaur perk up. I dunno like he saw his breakfast flying. He ran down my daughter's arm and flickflickflickflick:D, happy lizard there
