whining vent

A few months ago, I put the idea to our church's fellowship leader, and also sent emails to the board of directors of our church, about our having a tree to represent us at the local community center this year. There is a "festival" of decorated trees which civic groups participate, but our church never did before.

I didn't hear anything about it until the fellowship leader announced it at last week's service that they are having a tree and the ladies of the church will be setting it up next weekend. I sent her an email on Sunday after church in which I volunteered help and ornaments. The reply was almost week in coming and she said that everything was set an the ladies had already set a theme for the tree and my help and ornaments were not needed.

Now it was my idea to have the tree, then they went ahead and made decisions without letting me know they were even having meetings to make these decisions. I sent her back an email saying that in some such words, but her answer was that she didn't know what I was talking about saying I made the suggestion, it was the board's idea. I really feel I got backhanded on that. Go figure!

It's not so much that I want public acknowledgement, but to take my idea and run with it, then deny it was my suggestion - it just rankles me.

It was your idea Deb, but it's very possible that others had the same idea too in this Christmas season. If they already have a set theme and the ladies of the church working together on it, then it sounds like they have a plan and wouldn't need input from anyone else on the decorations. I think you should be happy that they'll be having a tree, which is the thing you were initially wanting, that should take top priority in your satisfaction even if you weren't thanked personally for your idea. That's just the way I see it...I'd recommend that you enjoy the tree and stay positive about it.

I am, but I will be laughing up my sleeve. A similar thing happened to my mother when she had to deliver a report to a club she was in. She got sick and another club member said he would give the report. Later she learned that this fellow took the credit for the report. He defended himself by the reasoning that it wasn't who wrote it - it's who delivers it should get the credit. I don't understand that logic, either.

No denying that it hurts when that happens, I try to take the high road and remember this quote from Harry Truman. “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.”

That happens all the time on the job. I long ago quit offering supervisors creative solutions, as they consistently would dismiss the idea, but then turn around and use it, as though it was their idea.

Another dark side of human behavior.

I'm sorry. People can be strange and do weird things. It's possible there was an idea from someone else also. Who would really know one way or the other. But I don't blame you for being upset that you were left out. I know that feeling and it's not a good one.

Used to happen to me on the job, too. I could either get all wrapped around the axle about it (which does no good at all), or I could just let go of it. So I learned to let go of it.

tnthomas, I've seen that so many times where I worked. Finally a handful of people went to the office to make sure the original idea was credited to the one person they knew brought the idea to fruition. Too many good money saving ideas are never acknowledged by the company as being "invented " by some ordinary worker.

A MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Administration) instructor was giving a detailed presentation at my work one day when he looked up and said, "If you want to find the easiest way to do a job, just hire a lazy person to do it. They will figure it out and do it the easiest way possible."

I always get a little chuckle when I remember this, and I think maybe there's some truth in it also.

If you were treated badly at work you would
probably change your job!

I would therefore suggest that as you feel that
you have been treated badly now, change your
Church.

Mike.
