Refurbished Kitchens Cabinets-How Is The Color?

These are the original cupboards built into my 50s era house. They were beige. I wanted to do something bold and went with the real dark blue. I love how it turned out. What do you guys think? They got new handles too.rsz_img_0291 (1).jpg
 

Looks great Boaterboi, really "pops", good job! My husband refinished our kitchen cabinets until we decide to stay with it or get 'refacing', so far we've been okay with the results for several years now. They look much better than the finish of the ones that came with the house when we bought it.

The color choice wouldn't have been mine. However all in all I do really like your kitchen. You kept the kitchen vintage. Love the counters. I hate when everything is torn out and all new put in.
 

You did a nice job.

But, as Kitties said, it wouldn't have been my choice either. Blue would be nice in a bathroom.

For a kitchen, I prefer warm earth tones. More appetizing. Or even a nice green.

You have a neat kitchen.

Nice job, I like the look and the decorating style, remove everything that doesn't say kitchen!

My little harvest gold kitchen is hopelessly cluttered in a 60's let it all hang out style, LOL.
 
Nice job!!! We recently had ours redone. Our home was built in 1976. The original kitchen cabinets were a maple wood color. Wife wanted to "brighten" the kitchen. We had a painting contractor turn them to bright white. The contractor did a superb job. Every thing was hand sanded, primed, and then coated with three coats of enamel. After each coat of enamel was sprayed, the wood was once again sanded lightly to remove any irregularities in the coating. All new hardware. We've rec'd lots of compliments.

Seems we live in a "throw away" society. If it wears out or you don't like it, trash it and replace it. Have seen quite a few of our friends refinish their kitchen cabinets. One of our friends had a "resurfacing" contractor come in and redo their counter tops and love the results.
 
In my last house, the kitchen cabinets were an ugly color. I looked into getting them replaced but the cabinet guy said I should just have them refinished as he said, and I quote, "this house could be hit by a tornado and those cabinets will still be standing". So I painted them. Unfortunately, what looked good on the paint chip didn't look so good on the cabinets. I thought they'd grow on me.....they didn't. I do not have a talent for picking colors.

Sold the house. Have white cabinets now.

Seabreeze ~ I love the black, too. The fish on top of the cupboard is so neat. Are those plants real?

Question: Did you both paint the insides of the cabinets, too? I did that once - painted kitchen cabinets from a dark brown to white - inside and out - and it took three week-ends to complete the job. I vowed to never do that again!
 
Thanks guys. The insides are white and I only washed them and put in shelf paper. My home has been extensively remodeled and added onto. The kitchen is the only room that still has all of the original trim, door and cabinetry. This goes back to when they built the cabinets into the house rather than screw in pre-fab cupboards. The plaster wall is the back of the cupboards which makes them very roomy inside. No way would I ever tear them out. Real craftsmanship went into building them. I was going to go with a lighter color but after looking at google images of cupboards I saw some done in the dark blue and thought it was stunning. I kept second guessing myself that it was too dark but I did it and I love it! Here is the other side of my vintage kitchen:

My son does high end cabinetry for a living. I showed him your kitchen and he loved it. He said more and more people are asking for much more vivid colors these days if they want painted cabinets..I am in the middle of redoing mine with his help. He is trying to sway me into adding color like that to mine. He told me I'm to drab. I'm thinking about it, but just don't have the nerve. I have a lot of cabinets in my kitchen,I'm afraid it might be to much. He suggested doing just one as a vocal point. I might try that.
 
Love that blue!! I wanted to do our cabinets a royal blue back in 1983 but could just not get up the nerve to actually do it - we finally painted them white and that worked too! We're about to move again and next house gets the Delft blue & white kitchen I love. Didn't work out in this house. Nice job!

Thanks Ruby, they're not black though, just stained a very dark brown, and we only did the outside. I love that fish and every now and then the cat climbs across the curtain rod and gets up there, I always have to chase him down before he knocks it down onto the counters. Luckily he seems to have given that up now that he's older. The plants on the cabinet are fake. When I was younger I used to have all live plants on top of all my kitchen cabinets near the ceiling, and hopping onto a kitchen chair to water and replace them was no big deal. Now that I'm in my senior years, I felt like it was too much trouble climbing up and down all the time like that, so I went with fake.

After watching the professionals do ours, I am certainly glad we did not attempt it ourselves. It takes lots of patience. And, our painters did not give up until each door or drawer was perfect. They even took the fronts off the doors to get a good finish before reinstalling them.

Thanks, Grumpy....I'm getting to old to mess with these big jobs. Will find someone that can do a good job well.
