Lion found hanging in Indonesian Zoo

Lion found hanging in Indonesian Zoo

It must have been a drug runner then.

Seriously: That zoo has been done over by ABC journos recently and it ain't heaven in there by any means. The owner has political connections and that's the best currency going in Indo.

But before we get too ott. Those lions aren't starved, they look in pretty good nick. That there are only 4 left could be down to them not having a long lifespan normally and that thankfully they are not being replaced by new ones. The young one was in good condition too, that they didn't think it was stupid enough to get it's head between cables is oversight writ large, but cruelty? A relative returned home from work to find the $600 pedigreed Staffy they treasured had hung itself by wedging it's stupid head between fence palings while trying to climb out of the yard. Sh*t happens.

That bony camel could be ancient, suffering some disease, or any other causes accounting for the sad condition of it.
Sad faces are what monkeys specialize in, like dogs, they are masters at it.
Suspect neglect by all means, and you're probably right, but animals die in the best zoos in the World too. I seem to recall one here lost a baby elephant to a similar accident just a few weeks ago.

...and a point to ponder. If the lion's body had vanished by the time the police got there then how, and from whom, did the D.Mail get the photo???

Just sayin', keep things in perspective to ensure that you only get outraged over the things that really merit outrage and not just those in rag selling headlines.

After the first pic I couldn't even read any more! That is terrible what is going on in that zoo, this is the first I've heard of this. Is there anything that can be done?

So sad!

Sh*t happens for regular people who aren't trained professionals; it doesn't happen when you know what you're doing. Zoo professionals have the ability to foresee the behavior of their charges and, like safety managers, should remove any potential dangers. The way the keeper was quoted it appears they are blaming the lion for being a lion; that's a huge cop-out.

And no, they aren't starved - they're fed plenty of tainted, poisoned meat.

That bony camel could be ancient, suffering some disease, or any other causes accounting for the sad condition of it.

You don't leave a diseased animal on display - you place it in quarantine and treat it.

Sad faces are what monkeys specialize in, like dogs, they are masters at it.

I agree that a sad-faced monkey is not cause for alarm.

Suspect neglect by all means, and you're probably right, but animals die in the best zoos in the World too. I seem to recall one here lost a baby elephant to a similar accident just a few weeks ago.

Not 43 "accidents" in 3 months!

...and a point to ponder. If the lion's body had vanished by the time the police got there then how, and from whom, did the D.Mail get the photo???

Perhaps, like our police, it took them several hours to respond. They were probably busy taking care of murdered tourists.

Just sayin', keep things in perspective to ensure that you only get outraged over the things that really merit outrage and not just those in rag selling headlines.

I realize that the Daily Mail is not exactly overflowing with journalistic integrity, but in this case I think there is a full investigation by some international body that is justified.

If this isn't worthy of at least investigation, let alone outrage, then I don't know what is. People killing people is something to be expected; people killing animals like this is something else again.

Absolutely horrible!!! I would hope there's a full investigation into this, and the place closed down for good. Surely there must be somewhere else they could take these animals?!

It is being investigated. Forget Indo investigations, but international animal rights people are on their case constantly. TV journos haunt them. Law suits are in the offing. Something is being done about it and i'm not defending them by any means.
Just pointing out that there are worse things happening to get outraged about.

Also this is in Asia, not downtown New York, they see things very differently there. It takes time to change cultural attitudes. Especially in places that resist and resent change.

I'm sure the keepers at Melbourne zoo will be chastened by your opinion of their animal care talents too.

AN elephant calf has died after getting his head caught while playing with his favourite toy tyre at Melbourne Zoo. Melbourne Zoo director Kevin Tanner says CCTV footage shows 11-month-old Sanook's death was the result of a tragic accident. Sanook was playing with a large suspended tyre in his barn on Tuesday evening when he managed to manoeuvre it in an unusual way that caused his head to become caught, Mr Tanner said.
"This placed pressure on his neck and would have prevented him from breathing," he said.
Preliminary post-mortem results confirm that as the cause of death.
The zoo says the tyre was one of Sanook's favourite toys, as it was for his sister Mali and brother Ongard.
"This is a tragic accident that has left our keepers, vets and staff community devastated," Mr Tanner said.
"To our knowledge no such accident has taken place previously in any zoo with elephants." Tyres are commonly used around the world in zoos as an approved form of enrichment for elephants, a zoo statement said.
Sanook was seen playing energetically and suckling from his mother Num-Oi on Tuesday and was found dead this morning. Sanook, who would have turned one in January, was the youngest of three calves born at the zoo.

Di that Elephant baby dying is a different kettle of fish, that was an accident that no-one saw coming and our zoos are impeccable, and i am offended that you have compared the two, the indonesian zoo needs to be shut down as they have no idea what they are doing, the tiger needs to be moved and they need to make sure it's fresh meat not laced with formalahyde

I understand that it's a very different climate there, but animal abuse is animal abuse no matter where it takes place. If they want to be accepted into the Brotherhood of Man they'd better clean up their act.

My concern is that, if they are politically jammed-up as you said, any outside pressure is going to be useless and any inside action non-existent. So, the animals will keep dying. I understand this is small compared to genocides and mass executions but it's just another layer on the Cake of Doom.

Accidents happen, despite the best safety precautions.

... but again, not 43 in three months. That's not an accident - that's ignorance and willful mistreatment.

Maybe the zoos should start looking into better, safer toys than tires.

Granted on all counts.... but changing that takes a lot more devious plotting than signing petitions on facebook and forgetting about it tomorrow when the outrage has faded. What the hell leverage does Facebook have in Indo?

Maybe the zoos should start looking into better, safer toys than tires.

Oh they'll be workin' on that. I believe they are looking into the idea of replacing them with small faux fur stuffed furry mammals. Is that what baby elephants kick around in the wild?
