Sayfullo Saipov cooked up terror scheme a year ago and wanted ISIS flag flown in hospital

ISIS has found the perfect means to commit mayhem...with these vehicle attacks. Any crowded public venue with lots of pedestrian/bicycle traffic is now subject to being a target. There is probably no practical means of insuring that this will not continue to happen...all over the Western world. So long as these fanatics live among us, we must always be vigilant. If nothing else, these attacks strike fear into a lot of people...and that, too, is a Plus for ISIS.

In reality, these terrorist attacks account for just a minute fraction of lives lost due to violence. Far more lives are lost to the criminal actions of the drug and street gangs which infest major sections of most of our cities. And then, there are the atrocities committed by our own home grown lunatics...Las Vegas, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech.....etc., etc.

If there is anything Good about this NYC attack, it is the fact that the killer is alive, and perhaps the police can learn something about how this ISIS network works, and take some action to reduce their opportunities.

For bike and walking paths along the road, maybe a guard rail or bike barriers would make it harder for a vehicle to jump a curb?

I'm afraid a driver with evil intent would mow down those barricades, but I have every confidence that now that motor vehicle terrorism has become more prevalent, we'll find protective barrier that works. The landscape of America will change, but lives will be saved.

If we change, they'll adapt.

Were Germans and Japanese allowed to enter the country during World War II?

Were members of the Turkish army welcomed in Vienna when it was under siege?

Were the city gates of Troy opened for the Greeks?

Do you leave your front door unlocked if you know that your neighborhood is full of criminals?

I just rode my bike today along a bike trail between a river and roadway a few feet away. It was very nice, and the thought of some idiot using a truck to hit me was the farthrest from my mind. But according to the reports, he had planned this for a year or more and had even practiced, choosing the time of day when the most people were there. He also said he would have continued to kill if he hadn't hit the school bus, which stopped him.

But if it did happen to me, my prayer would be that, because of my age and the fact that they tell me I don't look it, some fanatic would mistake me for a younger guy and then the nut who kills me in the name of ISIS would be humiliated and embarrassed by the outcries around the world to the point where their idealism would bring shame and severe criticism to all adherents of an extreme group who spout and disseminate pure hatred.

I believe that they have shown by their actions that they do not care whom they kill, and nothing they do shames them -- they haven't been shy about killing children, the elderly, etc. Or throwing people off buildings, or burning them alive, or beheading, or whatever they feel like doing to whomever they get their hands on.

The Muslim responsible for the NYC killings is bragging about it.

Their founder, Mohammed, led armies whose mission was conquest and death.

Yes the gates of Troy WERE opened for the Greeks. How do you think they got in?

They really don't. We're going to have to revive the castle, moat, and drawbridge to protect ourselves from people like these. Since we can't defeat them, and clearly we can't, our only option is to find better, more effective ways to defend ourselves.

There is no way to stop this. Be aware of your surroundings and if you see or hear anything try to alert as many as possible.
It happens fast and people don't have time to react.

You make a good point. Yesterday, I believe, a white "true blue American" walked into a Walmart in Thornton, Colorado and using his (legal or non-legal??) handgun randomly shot and killed 3 people. I suppose in Colorado, anyone and everyone can carry a gun in their pocket but I wonder if the relatives of those 3 shoppers are feeling any better, knowing that the killer was an American and not some foreign born terrorist. The carnage would probably have been greater if another half dozen people had pulled weapons and blasted away in an attempt to shoot him as he fled.

Getting to be a sick country with or without terrorists. IMHO

I sometimes wonder if we should all be armed? Maybe if people with murderous intentions knew their victims had weapons and we prepared to use them, they might think twice. These people are the worst kind of cowards, to shoot unarmed civvies. :(

An armed society is a polite society. Look at the violent crime rates in Vermont and Wyoming. Not only lower than all the other states, they're lower than any country in Europe.

That seems to be the case. Many of the cities are becoming shooting galleries. We live in a very rural area, with few problems...but it seems like almost every evening , on the TV news, there is a report of a shooting in Columbia, MO., and the Kansas City and St. Louis news is full of homicides and shootings on a daily basis. Parts of Chicago are almost like a war zone. People are going nuts all over the place. The mass shootings and terrorist related acts garner all the national news attention, but they are just a small percentage of the overall numbers of deaths/injuries. The bad part is that in so many of these cases, it's almost as if the shooter wants to "commit suicide by cop", and we may never know what drove them over the edge. At least, in this truck carnage, the authorities have the killer in custody, and hopefully will learn something that may help prevent similar killings.

If WaterBoarding Is used as punishment to those who are captured intact, it MIGHT be a deterrent to those who

are considering an attact. IMHO.

The death penalty is not even a 'deterrent', crazy-violent people do not stop and say. "gosh Wally, I might get in trouble if...."

Violence begets violence, everyone really does know that.
