I'm Freezing. Why ?

Strange, how the older I get, the colder I get. Today it is 68 F both inside and out side. But I am so cold. I have heard seniors talk about being cold all the time, but why ?

Kids run around outside in much colder temps, often without any heavy clothing, and they say they are not a bit cold.
In the summer time, 68 F is a very pleasant temp and I run around in shorts and a T-shirt without any complaint but in the winter 68 F feels way, way too cold. Anyone know why ?:why:

Sounds like maybe your circulation isn't at optimal. More walking and/or a exercise bike might help. Also, are you getting enough vitamins?

Next time you get a chance look at the skin of younger people. You will notice a firm smooth skin surface. That is because there is fat layers under skin and as we know fat is an insulator. Not trying to be insensitive but take notice overweight people sweat more in heat.
To prove the point find a 65 yr old or older and check out the wrinkles. Fat loss under the skin is the reason.

Aging causes thinner skin and sometimes poor circulation.

All good answers. I hadn't thought about those reasons. Now that I check it out, my skin is definitely thinner than it used to be.
A month or so ago, at age 71, I noticed for the 1st time that I have crepe like skin under my upper arms. haha

I know that when it's 68 degrees in my house during the day in winter, it's pretty cool feeling, so even when I go out for a few hours I try to make sure the house temperature doesn't go below 70....for me or the pets. Now, outside in winter when it's sunny and 68 degrees, I walk around in short sleeves and am not cold at all, but I don't get the benefit of the sun in my house.

I wonder too if part of it isn't mental perception, like in spring and summer your attitude is better because of the changes around you, trees, flowers, etc. I don't know how noticeable the change in season is in California, but in Colorado there's quite a difference in appearance, even if many winter days are warm and sunny. In winter the same temperature may feel colder just because you know in your mind that it's winter and you have to make sure you stay warm. Of course like the others have said, age has to have a little bit to do with it.

Yes, I was wondering about a psychological aspect. That also makes sense.

PS: In Southern California there is not much difference of the flora, between the seasons, except for the bouganvilla which flowers only in late spring and in the summer. Even now, in the depth of winter, the "Birds of Paradise" are in full flower. And oh my goodness, I sure do love the deep purple bouganvilla, especially the ones 30 feet tall. In the bright sunlight it's enough to take your breath away.

I had to look up that up Traveler, very nice in the purple! :sunglass:

Yes, should be OK unless you have an internal bleed somewhere.

If your iron is down and you take a course of iron tablets but it still doesn't recover you will need to undergo further examinations.
If your iron is OK just wear more woolies and see if that helps.

It is strongly suggested that we keep the temperature of the airplane interior set at around 70° in the winter. Normally, I would set it at about 72°. In the winter time, we noticed that older people always complained that the plane was still cold. Before taking off, I would meander back through the coach area and it always seemed very comfortable to me. The airlines do not supply blankets in coach anymore (I wish they would), so I would go up one degree at a time, until someone would complain that it was too warm. The flight attendants would always ask me to keep the temperature turned down, but it was my job to satisfy the customer, or in this case, the passenger.

I knew that just sitting still in a seat for a 5+ hour coast to coast flight is asking a bit much for older people to be comfortable. I also would see some Seniors bring their own blankets on-board, which I always thought was a good idea. In Business and First Class, blankets are supplied. I know one reason why United stopped supplying blankets was because too many were disappearing. I recommended years ago to take our logo off of the blankets and the company even tried that in an attempt to dissuade passengers from stealing blankets as souvenirs, but even that didn't stop the thefts.

Anyway, I was told by my PCP that older people get colder more easily due to a number of factors like; our skin becomes thinner, some take blood thinners or BP meds, etc. I seem to tolerate both high and low temps. Just lucky, I guess.

Its the humidity level in the winter indoors. If your humidity level is low you will feel cool. It should be between 40 to 50 percent.

Invest In a humidity meter and a good humidifier.

Comfort level at 68 degrees and 20 percent humidity is quite different at 68 degrees and 50 percent humidity.

Humidity, in the Winter, is certainly a factor. The household heating systems tend to dry out the air, and the human body then loses moisture through the skin...which in turn has a cooling effect on the body. Installing a humidifier can be a big help if a person keeps their house at 70 degrees, or less. Or...turn the thermostat up to 74, and enjoy the drier warmth. Just 3 or 4 degrees can make quite a difference.

Lack of humidity has an adverse effect on furniture and wood products and costs more for fuel.

40 to 50 percent. Try it. Money back guarantee if it doesn't work.

I used to be involved in fine woodworking. Wood contacts and expands Ike it is still alive on a tree.

That's true. When it gets colder, especially at night, you can hear the furniture snap, crackling, and popping.

We feel colder as we age because we're not as active. Movement keeps the blood circulating and keeps us warm.
You're right and as I've gotten older I dress warmer and take better care of myself so I don't get sick or worn down. That's something I never thought about when I was young

Researchers suggest that the following health benefits are linked to ginseng:

- Increased energy
- Diabetes Management
- Prevents Premature Aging
- Improves Cognitive Ability
- Anti-inflammatory effects
- Flu prevention
- Weight Loss
- Prevents Colorectal Cancer

Working out for an hour or two would do all of these things far better................... Too many people not getting off their duff and believing a pill is going to cure everything.
