Get off my lawn.

C'est Moi

Dishin' it out.

OMG, I am so cranky. We live on a river and our street is a cul-de-sac with a boat ramp on one end and a wooded area next the ramp. A bunch of teenage boys have acquired dirt bikes and all weekend long I have to listen to those loud things roaring up and down the street and turning around in the cul-de-sac. Up and back, up and back. ARGH.

I would call the police but one of the boys is the son of a neighbor who IS a policeman, so ugh. I know those bikes are not licensed for the street and it just infuriates me that I am subject to that freakin' noise all damn weekend and every day when school is out. Will my entire summer be like this or will I finally get my gun out and go stand in the street??? (Joking, but not much.)

I don't know why people have to be so inconsiderate. This used to be such a quiet place and now younger families are moving in to spoil everything. Yep. I'm cranky. :eek:ld:

I'm sorry that has happened C'est Moi. Sounds horrible. I would hate that, too! I would still call the police, anonymously (you can do that, or at least we can where I live) and say it's a noise disturbance.

The joys of urban living!

I'm sure I will eventually, Ruthanne. I just can't handle the noise. I try to tune it out but it's impossible the way they rev those stupid engines. A board member of our HOA lives next door so I have griped to him about it; not much they can do on public streets, though.

I totally get you, C'est Moi. It would drive me nuts not just for the noise but for the inconsideration. And neighborhoods do change, and usually not for the best.
If this keeps up, I wonder if you could somehow get a petition going for a speed bump to be installed.

Oh, we cranky old people. :tapfoot:

Haha, I'm not sure which would be more aggravating... the speed bump or the noise!!! :D I'm thinking one of these days I will just go out there and flag them down and ask politely that they GTFO of here. I'm sure they will egg my house or something in response, but maybe not.

Did I read that you are in Hawaii? My son lives on the big island.

Yes, I am. But on Oahu. Our street has a speed bump because there are idiots who think any long road suffices as a race track. And not only a speed bump, but also a round-about at a main intersection. Made a big difference.

Yeah, you don't want to get personally targeted.

Funny that back when our kids were small, I had no problem walking outside and yelling at any of the neighbors' kids. They were used to it, haha. Now people are more apt to react harshly or retaliate in some way.

You are so right. I used to yell at the neighbor kids when I was much younger or talk firmly. People are vendictive now a days. It's a changed world out there.

How many dirt bikes are there?

Not wanting to listen to that level of noise has nothing to do with being "cranky". I would find it hard to tolerate it even for one day.

I'd file a complaint with the police and let the chips fall where they may. The situation isn't going to get better by you doing nothing, C'est moi.

If they are not violating the law, I wonder if you can still sue them for noise harassment or something, in small claims court? Might be worth looking into.

I have a similar situation where I live.

At the end of the street are a couple of young fellows who buy, sell and perform casual repairs on dirt bikes, ATV's, etc... When they are working on the vehicles or when they are showing them for sale the test strip is a two block stretch in front of my apartment complex. Not much can be done unless the police happen to catch them in the act of driving without license plates, helmets, etc... The good news is that they rent and most young folks in this area don't stay put for more than a year.

Stand up for yourself. Look the neighbor right in the eye and tell them enough is enough. Maybe you won't stay on good terms with them but that means they weren't good neighbors in the first place.
Growing a spine _can_ be done graciously. And being a wimp just makes you the victim.

That noise would bug me too, but I guess one to four bikes at a time can't be too bad, more would be worse. What about the speed? Are they going fast over the street limit, and are neighbors concerned about their children or pets being run over?

It sounds like you're in a great area otherwise, with the boat ramp and especially the wooded area. You can't call the cops unless they're breaking a law, and honestly, I don't think saying something to them will stop it from going on. They need an alternative place to have fun with their bikes that's not too far away, unless they can find one, it looks like you're out of luck. I don't envy you, that's for sure.

Unfortunately, I don't know where these teenagers live; I think they migrate to our street because of the cul-de-sac and boat ramp. The policeman's kid (actually his grandson) is not out there today. So I would have to flag down the riders and confront them. I'm just going to call the police and report a noise nuisance, and they'll likely blow me off.

Well, it USED TO BE a great area!! :D They are riding pretty fast but the biggest issue is the noise, plus the bikes are not street-legal. (No license plates.) I'm going to call the police and see what can be done, if anything.

Ugh. Isn't it annoying?

I know you're right; a police complaint is probably the only way to go. I hate having to go to such lengths for an annoyance; I'm sure the police have bigger fish to fry than noise complaints.

We had the same problems with some yahoos in our neighborhood who had a couple of souped-up quad-runners, very loud. They'd race down the street and then loop around the neighborhood on the big circular road. Finally, we called the police on the basis that they were not street legal. The police would come, look around and leave and as soon as the cops were gone, they'd be back at it. Apparently they realized that they could roar down the long street, around the loop and get back home before the police showed up. The police said there was nothing they could do unless they actually saw them on the street. We weren't actually sure which house was theirs, so couldn't send the officers there.

Then, miraculously, they moved. Hallelujah!!!!!

The police will not blow you off. They may advise you to suck it up, cause they're stretched thin and maybe they know them from other complaints.
Would help if you catch the pests on video and audio with your cell phone. Also help if your neighbors are like minded and stand with you.
Some one else suggested it's a temporary thing and you may have to tolerate the annoyance with that in mind.
Personally I hate the racket and crossing the street I might just bump into one and scream for an ambulance ... maybe, sure is tempting.
